Want to hear a funny story? Ok, here's one:
A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to my Korean friend Jaesik online. We were talking about how we are 30 and unmarried, and joking about how if we weren't married by 40, we should make a pact to marry each other (^_^). He went on to say that in Korea, they have a saying for people like us.
Naturally, I was curious, so I urged him to continue.
He answered slowly, "Well, in Korean culture, we would be known as 'Ddong cha.' Exactly translated, Ddong cha means 'old car that is about to be useless.'
At that point I burst out laughing - I definitely don't consider myself an old junker, by any means! Jaesik added,
"Ya, literally translated, Ddong cha means 'Shit Car.'"
Oh man, I laughed. And yet, later on, reflecting back on our conversation, it made sense - in Korea, the first question most people will ask you, even before they ask about your nationality, is "How old are you?"
Then, they take a gander at your ring finger, and if it is naked, they give you a sad, pitying look, often accompanied by a slow, solemn head shake.
Coming from a western culture, it's hard to wrap your head around it, but ya, that's how many people, especially the older generation, think.
"Yes, it's nice to meet you, too. My age, you ask? Shit car."

Hahaha, thanks for leaving the message about you and your 48 friends crashing our Christmas Open House! It's awesome, actually, cuz now it looks like 54 people said maybe, which is shows how popular we are! Hehe...anyway, hope you can show up, yo!
Hehehe, ok so I gotta tell you a little story about my students, ok? Now just sit down quietly, cross your legs, and listen carefully, boys'n'girls...
On the first day of classes, I always encourage my students to choose an English name, since Korean names are so difficult to memorize. Usually a scattered handful of students have previously chosen an English name, but more often they don't. If they don't have one yet, I tell them it's HOMEWORK, one word that is guaranteed to elicit a collective sigh of discontentment.
However, once they get over it, they begin the search for the perfect name: one that is as cool, meaningful and clever as possible. For example, one student decided to name himself "Harvard." That created a stir in the classroom - suddenly everyone wanted to be named after universities. (Yes, by Korean standards, "Harvard" is cool, meaningful AND clever...)
Once the uproar subsided, students began to really get into the task of choosing a name for themselves. One student decided on "Hilarious," which IS pretty damn hilarious, if you ask me. Another boy likes to be known as "Frog," and to be honest, he kind of looks like one. Maybe he'll find a princess to kiss him someday. But the funniest kid in our school was rather troubled because he couldn't decide on a name for himself. So, he finally asked one of the teachers what he should call himself. The teacher said, "What about Lucas?" Unfortunately, the student misunderstood him, and later that day, announced to the entire school that his new English name was "Lucifer."
Only, he also can't pronounce "L's," so his REAL new name, which we all now call him by, is
RUCIFER.
That is just too cute for words, damnit. Man I get a kick out of my kids!! *^_^*
