'DAY OF SILENCE, April 18, 2007: The Day of Silence is an annual event held to bring attention to anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools. Students and teachers nationwide will observe the day in silence to echo the silence that LGBT and ally students face everyday. In it's 11th year, the Day of Silence is one of the largest student-led actions in the country.'

The quote above was from the website's mission statement. I didn't know if anyone knew about this, or if it was going to be brought up.

Help defeat the April 3rd Advisory vote by voting NO! If it passes it could deny and take away health care benefits from Alaskan workers and their partners simply because they are gay.

I, Lea Merritt, am running for two positions this Fall semester, 2006. Firstly, Vice President, and secondly, Programming Director.

During the last year I have served as President for The Family. It was a challenging year. I knew one of the former presidents of The Family who presided in the '90's and during her time, she made The Family a huge, fun, welcoming place through a lot of strenuous personal effort on her part. However, when I first attempted to attend The Family about four years ago, only two people showed up to the meeting other than myself, and when I tried to go later, NO ONE showed up anymore. This was while I was still in the midst of identity turmoil, trying to figure out the most basic parts of who I was and where I fit into the world. I was timid, shy, and scared yet rarin' to go. I looked to find community for someone over the age of high school and under the age of 21, knowing that at my other college there had been a strong queer community; but for a questioning female in Anchorage, there was little to find. After half a year of mulling over whether or not to stay in Anchorage, I started at UAA, just as frustrated as ever with the lack of queer presence on campus. Another year off, and I came back to UAA a second time. This time, I was determined to do something about the problem. So, I went again to a meeting of The Family finally, where a wonderful young man named Zane Olson, was running the show. We became quick friends. Unfortunately, toward the middle to the end of the semester, he passed away, and the fruits of work we'd been doing petered out as there wasn't as much effort being put in. Grieving took a while, but when the new semester started, I hoped to carry on the work of revitalizing The Family that had begun the spring before.

And this is where the story of my presidency begins...

In Fall term 2005, I took over for Zane. We had between three and six people coming to the meetings at the beginning, but as we got the word out with posters and by word of mouth, we grew to 65 members on our mailing list by the end of Spring 2006. In between then, we played games, watched movies, had a bowling night, danced, had discussions about ourselves and our feelings, hosted guest speaker Reverend Johnathan to speak about the Biblical passages about homosexuality and what they mean, raised money through Haunted Halloween Fun Night and Poll-Sitting, crashed the fraternities' Valentine's Day dance, did a panel discussion classroom visit to a women's studies classroom about our experiences, spoke as guests and hosted the high school gay-straight alliances all-school-district meeting, spoke at the state-wide meetings to uphold the passage of the equal-partner-benefits ruling, had an informational booth in the Student Union selling baked goods to raise money, had a multi-cultural potluck, got money from Travel Board for one of our members to fly and be part of a university leadership conference in Tacoma, Washington, participated in Residence Housing Association's (RHA) Drag Show at the Commons (where I won for Drag King, by the way), and planned, however unorganized, a Gender Blender Dance and Talent Show in the Student Union. It was a LOT of work, and I'd say, a drastic improvement from meetings usually of three to six sitting around and discussing what we were going to do. We actually did stuff, and not a little, but a LOT!

So, we've accomplished a lot, but we need to keep it up and have room to grow even bigger and better. Part of this includes re-writing our 20-year-old mission and vision statements as well as our constitution. Part of this includes a more even distribution of necessary tasks, so all the responsibility doesn't fall to a few members. This means all of you stepping up to the plate and lending your voice and time to the club. We need to raise more money, do more networking with the community at large, get more advertising on campus going, fight for our rights, be there supporting each other, and keep having fun.

My responsibilities this semester have dramatically increased, so I will not have the time to act as President of the Family. I have recently become a Senator in Student Government (USUAA), and therein am Concert Board Representative as well as the Chair of Activities Committee, am Club Council Representative for German Club, and am taking a heavy load of classes in the amount of 17 credits. However, I think that my experience in bringing The Family out of its funk while performing social and administrative tasks can lend a helping hand and voice of conscience to whoever becomes the next President. Thus I am seeking the position of Vice President.

Secondly, as a psychology major and someone generally interested in the emotions, well-being, and intellectual aspects of being queer, I am running for the position of Programming Director to keep us up to speed on learning about and supporting ourselves as well as other members of our community.

I hope you'll happily consider me for these two positions of Vice President and Programming Director of the Family. Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
Lea Merritt
(Outgoing President of The Family)
Francis

Sep 27, 2006 4:57 AM

Well here's my speech for my candidacy for the president of The Family. I wrote it on word so it won't look quite the same but it should do. If you have any questions feel free to message me:
Hi, my name is Francis Manyoky, and, even though The Family is definitely heading in the right direction this semester, my goal if elected is to assist The Family in devising, and implementing a more defined, and effective organizational structure which will allow the club to function more efficiently, improve small group communication, and encourage inclusive participation. If implemented correctly this achievement would ideally minimize internal conflicts, stimulate club growth, and facilitate club achievements. Because anyone who attended The Family last semester knows that the club organization and guidelines were by far the biggest hindrance our club faced. And as a result the meeting were not very efficient- we spent a lot of time waiting for people to arrive and had difficulties making inclusive decisions- and internal conflict arose several times. Not to say we didn’t have fun and get some goals accomplished, but things definitely didn’t go as smooth as we would have hoped. I believe developing a firm foundation for the club should be the first priority, and hopefully it will also be accomplished quickly so we can get on with the real goals and ideas of the family.
I believe I am qualified to be president for the following reasons:
1) As far as I know, I am the only candidate running for this position that will have the time to attend the club meetings.
2) Even though I have never been a club officer, I have been an active, and
involved member of The Family for the past year.
3) I have the desire to contribute to the enhancement and continuation of The Family’s progress to the best of my ability.
4) I understand the importance of having an all inclusive and accepting atmosphere in which one can escape to.

My plan of action is very basic, doable, and necessary. First, I plan to form a committee to revise the club’s constitution and develop a reasonable set of bylaws; this committee will include any members who wish to participate, and all revisions and additions will be voted on by the members of the club. Also, I would like to allow the formation of committees representing each mission of the family, and, though it is not 100% which is an example of why we need to revise the constitution, I believe these missions are the following:
• To provide an all inclusive and accepting social environment
• To provide support for fellow GLBTA
• To participate in gay activism
• And to educate both members of the club and others in our community

To finish off my speech I would like to state some ideas I have for the family to demonstrate that I have a thought process, but my main idea is for the club to come up with ideas and goals for The Family through inclusive club participation because a whole bunch of heads are better than one. For activism I was thinking something along the lines of finding ways in which we could improve our community from the perspective of GLBTA, like the ones Viki mentioned in her speech, and establishing a louder and stronger voice at UAA and in the community by advocating for what we believe is right and protesting what we believe is wrong as corny as that sounds. As for social activities my main epiphany was hosting a GLBTA film festival. My ideas for improving the effectiveness of the club’s government are the following:
? Only requesting an officer to commit to one night a week at most
? Adopting the “All agree, all oppose” raising of hands method which will include all members willing to participate
? Allow and encourage members to come up with projects themselves and head a committee on it if they believe it is important with in reasonable bounds
? Not to force people into participation but to encourage them if they want to

But I would like to emphasize that my main desired purpose for running for president is to assist and encourage member participation no matter if three people show up or if a hundred show up, because even one person can set goals and accomplish them, and participate in fun activities.

Sep 26, 2006 7:17 AM

I just wanted to state welcome back for another year here with The Family. With this election year, I have decided to run for the position of President and make a difference with the group. Why run for presidency you ask…well simply because I feel we can do so much more than what we did in past years. The plans I have will help us in the community with the high schools, the local support groups, as well as ourselves.

My plans for our future in this year would be to work more with high school students. The fact that so many high school kids to come to UAA at some point in time I feel that we should help them be welcome in the community. A lot of students from high schools have come to me in regarding of what is available beyond high school if they come to UAA. What type of support is available for them if they have a problem or situation that they want to feel comfortable. I told them The Family is a safe place, a fun place for you to come and meet new people, discuss problems you may have trying to “come out of the closet” or if someone is harassing you in regarding your sexuality. We are a Family and to make us available when you need someone to talk to. I have had some faculty members from both UAA and from the Anchorage School District that has 100% support for us and helping us be more involved with high school students.

The idea of having a barbeque with high school GSA’s or to attend area wide meetings to let them know we are here and we support them too! We are the ones that can make this group achieve higher acknowledgement from society and from UAA. We are the ones that can make that difference.

I also had plans for being more involved with Alaska Pacific University and start a bridging program with them as well. I know a lot of gays and lesbians that attend that university and they don’t have a group like The Family. They don’t have the resources available unlike we do and hence the reason as to why I want to start a program involving APU alongside UAA. The more we have an impact with society and a next door neighbor like APU, we will have a lot to look forward to and a lot to reflect on.

The many ideas that I have had include more drag shows with RHA, inviting both Myrna and Rosie from Mad Myrna’s to help judge our shows. To have more dances where everyone is welcome both college students and high school students and have several, several advertisements posted everywhere and anywhere we can get our hands to. Advertisement will be the key to our success, to be absolutely obnoxious with the ads so people will know we do and still exist. There are several fundraising ideas that we can receive and get help with so we will have the money to put these events on and a bake sale isn’t one of them.
To listen to what others have to say in their opinion that may help our club is an essential. Last year I heard so many different voices with different opinions but they were never heard. They were never truly heard and it bothered me hearing and knowing of so many wonderful and helpful ideas, but nobody heard their voice. I want to hear those voices and let them be heard for their ideas. We are a Family, it is what Family is suppose to do.
To me…this club is important to me and I know it is for you. I hope that I have had an affect for you to make a decision to determine who will assist running this club. This isn’t a one person job, this is a team effort and a team effort it will be. There will be times I can’t make it…but the meetings I can’t make are the fun meetings where you folks can get together and have a blast! You don’t need me there to have fun if I can’t make it at least on time. Will that affect how I run this group…of course not because there are other people under me that would help carry this on as well. So like I have stated, this not a one-man team but simply one team of ten, twenty, hundreds of people that can make things be work.
In closing, I hope all will really sit and think about your decisions and what is best for The Family, and the society that supports The Family.
