Latest review for DIVERTING THE BUDDHA (The Skewering of Democracy)

"DIVERTING THE BUDDHA is an ambitious novel that delivers through a vivid portrayal of the treachery and deceit that emerged during the catastrophic Vietnam War. Bob Swartzel wastes little time in immersing his readers in a chaotic world where poor innocent people are caught between a corrupt Vietnamese leadership, as well as the self-interest of a few profiteers and an American foreign policy gone amok. Among the many achievements of this novel is Swartzel’s ability to provide his readers with a realistic sense of the historical setting the characters inhabit. It also vividly captures the chaotic theater of war where we witness a gritty epoch of guns, politics, treachery and economic self-interest.

No doubt there are many novels pertaining to the Vietnam War, however, this one stands out as an unforgettable tale at its most emotional and painful with its multiple perspectives pertaining to the politics and history recounted in human terms.

Wow, the Brookline Booksmith. WAAAAY back in the day I spent every dollar I earned in either the Booksmith or the Musicsmith. Seriously, it was to the point where the guys that worked in the music section used to leave me notes on the record dividers.
I wonder whatever became of Kurt and Dave anyway???

GUDGUD Magazine

May 23, 2007 5:59 AM

Just wanted to let you (and your comment-reading friends) know that GUD Issue 1 is now available for purchase!

Issue 1 comes to life with Darby Larson's "Electroencephalography" where an experiment in robot-building goes terribly awry. And if you've ever woken up with an unexpected physical deformity—say, an arrow in your heart—you'll truly enjoy the next story. There's also a smattering of flash fiction and psychedelia; a straight-out story where things aren't what they seem, poetry that takes you from the perverse to the sublime, some magic realism, science fiction, and a few letters to another species thrown in for good measure. We haven't forgotten those of you with a literary bent. In addition, the artwork in this issue is particularly strong, with oil paintings, watercolors, photography, and photo illustrations complementing the words with which they are paired.

Thanks for being a friend!

Hey, how are you?

I am Duncan O'Neil, a fictional character from the literary romance novel "Rehearsal: A Different Drummer" by LK Hunsaker.

I 'ave just taken a spot as guitarist in a small-town band my friend Evan says is no' too bad and may go places. I am no' sure about staying around that long, though the other mates seem alright. Playin' onstage with Ev is something we 'ave talked about since we met a couple o' years ago in a little dive I was playin' to make ends meet, but I donae like t' be stuck in one place long. There is this girl who hangs with the band, a good friend of his named Susie, a dance teacher I hear, who is no' like other girls I 'ave met. She was friendly and sweet when takin' my hand, but reserved. I think she has a thing for Ev but they are no' together. Maybe I will stay around a bit and see...
