High Five New York
Video documentation of a performance piece by my friend Nate Kassel who rode around on his bike slapping high-fives to people who were trying to hail taxi cabs in NYC. Enjoy!

The Alchemical Nursery Project announces a Trash Art Challenge. The concept of the Trash Art Challenge is for local artists to take discarded and found objects to show how trash can be redesigned into works of art.
Participating artists’ works will be exhibited in the “Lead to Gold Alchemical Trash Art Show” from May 21st-27th at Spark Contemporary Art Space (1005 E. Fayette St, Syracuse) as well as in the lobby of the Palace Theater (2384 James St, Syracuse) on May 28th and 29th.
The May 21st showing at Spark is part of the Third Thursdays citywide arts open (see
www.th3syracuse.com
for more information).
The art will be auctioned off for the benefit of the Alchemical Nursery Project, during the International Social Action Film Festival at The Palace Theater in Eastwood on May 28 and 29, 6:30 – 9:00 pm.
Participating artists will be provided free tickets to both nights of the International Social Action Film Festival and be featured on The Alchemical Nursery Project website. In addition, a panel of judges will award the “Most Creative” entry with a cash prize equal to the amount bid for the artists’ work.
The submission deadline for entries is May 11, 2009. Artists should request the Trash Art Challenge Artists Agreement for participation info.
The trash art challenge was inspired by Alchemical Nursery co-founder Elizabeth Slate’s decision to save her trash and stop putting it to the curb – recyclables included. One year later, she has a large tupperware container filled with non recyclables – mostly plastic wrapping and packaging weighing approximately 5 pounds, in addition to sorted recyclables, all of which are available to participating artists for the Trash Art Challenge.
The Film Festival will showcase local and international short films as well as a feature presentation of “War Dance,” an Academy Awards Nominee and Sundance Film Festival Winner.
All proceeds will benefit The Alchemical Nursery Project, a local nonprofit

Ceramic Beadmaking Class
COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Bonnie Ryan
CFAC is offering a beginner level ceramic beadmaking class. The eight-week course is scheduled to start April 10th and will run Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm.
Course instructor, Bonnie Ryan, will explore with students clay handling, glazing and jewelry construction techniques that can be used to make distinctive jewelry or decorations.
Ms. Ryan has worked with jewelry and ceramics for many years and brings to the classroom a wealth of knowledge and excitement about African and Indian jewelry made from ceramic, glass, and semi-precious stones.
Everyone will have an opportunity to create enough beads to construct at least one necklace, bracelet, and ornament. At the end of the course you will be able to keep all the pieces you have created.
Register now, spaces are limited. Maximum group size is eight students, ensuring that everyone taking part enjoys close personal attention from the instructor. All tools, materials and equipment are provided. The focus is on practical and creative work and your instructor will keep a close eye to help you achieve the best results.
