Wolverhampton LGB&T Health & Well-Being Show 2008 taking place at the Lighthouse Arts Centre on Saturday 23 February.

Wolverhampton’s biggest ever Lesbian, gay, bisexual and Transgendered (LGB&T) event – and it’s FREE!

Sexual health and HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is holding a Health and Wellbeing Show aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGB&T) community on Saturday 23 February 2008 from 12pm – 5pm at the Lighthouse Arts Centre, in Wolverhampton. The show coincides with LGBT History Month which aims to raise awareness about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. THT is working in partnership with Wolverhampton LGBT Network, Wolverhampton Network Consortium and Gender Matters to bring together local support groups to showcase a range of services available to LGB&T people in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas.

The Health and Wellbeing show is free and open to anyone from or who supports the LGB&T community in Wolverhampton. Over 30 stands will be at the show offering information on local LGBT groups, educational opportunities as well as free taster sessions and seminars on community safety, transgender awareness, counselling, psychotherapy, holistic therapies and yoga. An LGBT history month exhibition will be displayed along with works from local LGBT groups.

There will be children’s activities including children’s yoga, as well as entertainment provided by Zip Theatre. Free films will be shown in the Lighthouse cinema including Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1.00pm), Nina’s Heavenly Delights (1.15pm), Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop café (3.20pm) and Brokeback Mountain (3.40pm).

Food and refreshments will be available on the day for sale from the Lighthouse Arts Centre Café including vegetarian and vegan options or bring your own packed lunch.

There will also be a prize draw to win 2 pairs of tickets to see lesbian comedienne Clare Summerskill (described by Radio 4 Woman's Hour as "a lesbian Victoria Wood") and the chance to win a pair of tickets to 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde courtesy of Arena Theatre.

Jane Morel, Regional Manager, for Terrence Higgins Trust said: “This is the biggest ever LGB&T event in Wolverhampton and the show really is a celebration of the lives and achievements of the LGB&T community. Unfortunately many people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered still face stigma and prejudice in their everyday lives. This event is all about working together to celebrate diversity and engaging the LGB&T community to help make Wolverhampton a safe and supportive environment for everyone to live in.”

Hi,

We're two dissertation students from Durham University conducting a
dissertation study on lesbian and bisexual preferences for facial attraction
across the menstrual cycle.

We're looking to recruit more participants for our study and wondered if you
would be able to help us out. The study is all online and consists of
completing a questionnaire and doing a facial attraction task which will need
to be conducted each week for the length of your menstrual cycle. It is
entirely confidential and anonymous, even from us, and your particpation would
be really really appreciated.

Similar studies have been undertaken on hetrosexual populations therefore you
would be participating in founding research which aims to fill a significant
area of neglect in facial attraction studies.

We would be grateful if you forward this message to your mailing list/or a
similar procedure depending on what your university lgbta does. If anyone is
interested in conducting the study then please contact us at
s.l.griffths@dur.ac.uk or m.l.lowe@dur.ac.uk and we'll give you the online link.

Many thanks for your help!

On the 2nd October two young men in the Saudi Arabian city of Al-Bahah were convicted of ‘sodomy’ and sentenced to 7,000 lashes. The lashes were carried out in stages over the course of three weeks and the sentence has now been carried out. In Saudi Arabia being gay, lesbian or bisexual is illegal and the maximum penalty is death.

This year NUS LGBT Campaign is campaigning for ‘Love without Borders’. Around the world, LGBT people are persecuted, imprisoned and even murdered in state-sponsored homophobia. We live in a global community and no longer can we stand by while LGBT people are persecuted. Now is the time to use our freedom to fight for the rights of others across the globe. When abuses of human rights take place we must not be silent.

To this end NUS LGBT campaign, working with partnership organisations, will be organising an emergency demonstration outside the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, 30 Charles Street, London, W1J 5DZ at 1.30pm on Friday 19th October. We call on individuals and groups, LGBT or otherwise to protest against the continued criminalisation, imprisonment, torture and murder of LGBT people in Saudi Arabia. We will be handing a letter of protest to the Saudi Ambassador, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf, calling on his Government to respect the human rights of its own LGBT citizens.

Please join us in the struggle for Love without Borders – LGBT rights around the world - and make your views known to the Saudi Ambassador on Friday.

Yours in pride

Scott Cuthbertson , NUS LGBT Officer (Open Place)

Claire Anderson, LGBT Officer (Women’s Place)

hey guys, anybody going to this if u aint got exams/revision?:

To mark International Day Against Homophobia Terrence Higgins Trust and the Wolverhampton LGBT Network, Out for Good and other community groups are meeting in St Peter’s Square outside Wolverhampton’s Civic Centre on Thursday 17th May at 12.15pm to raise awareness of the plight of people experiencing homophobia worldwide.

77 countries still punish women, men and children because of their sexuality and, despite recent advances in equality , too many Gay and Bisexual people here in the UK, including thousands of young people, experience bullying, discrimination and fear on a daily basis because of homophobia.

We would appreciate your support for this event. Please could you forward this email to other people who may want to come and mark this important day with us.

Thanks

Centro are holding a lunchtime (including lunch!) consultation seminar with the LGBT community on Friday 2nd March from 12-2pm at
Wolverhampton YMCA, 29-31 Temple St, Wolverhampton, WV2 4AN.

Centro are interested in finding out about LGBT people's views on public transport as part of their work to try and make services more accessible to everyone who lives in the area.

Please could you highlight this event to people who may be interested. As well as those who are regular users of public transport it may be of particular interest to people who find public transport difficult to use, for example because of concerns about safety or because of lack of information, but would like to increase their use of public transport.

Please contact me (or jane) for further information or just turn up.

Many thanks

Jan 29, 2007 4:09 PM

hey everybody. please could you all do one thing for me and all sign up to this petition, it takes about ten seconds to fill your name and will make a difference. you all know how awkward it can be for me with identification purposes, this petition from downing street aims to change that. pls read and sign for me. thanks, jack.

A new petition for signing is now at :

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/TransDiscrim/

The petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to prohibit
discrimination in the provision of goods, services and
facilities, includng health care,on the grounds of transsexual
or transgender status, at the earliest point possible.

Please encourage as many UK citizens as possible to sign this ASAP, so that
as we go into negotiations with government on the proposed new Regulations
supposedly affording us protection when accessing goods, services and
facilities, we can show the strong support behind our mandate.

Please also encourage as many non-trans people as possible to sign it.

Everyday, we receive at least one more cry for help from someone who ahs
been refused either a goods, service or facility because they are trans -
many are about a refusal to fund access to health care, or being told they
will wait 5 or more years before they will be seen for an initial assessment
for treatment. Sometimes it will be because they have been thrown out of a
bar or restaurant, or asked to not use the leisure centre, or refused a
place on a course because it is 'not suitable' i.e. they are not suitable.
It goes on and on, and we could cite so many cases of trans people being
refused the right of access to goods, services or facilities, especially
health care, that other people take for granted.

We need to stand up and be counted, and we need YOU to stand up and be
counted now.

Please do not sign up twice or more - just once, but make it really
effective by getting your friends to sign up.

Many thanks

right people, homework for all you kiddies!

your task is to design a poster advertising the lgbt! within this include
*The e-mail details,
*Myspace website.

I have realised that there is no advertising of the Lgbt anywhere around the Uni and feel this is unfair.

Dan (the societies guy) has E-mailed me saying we might be entitled to have a Lgbt night at the Uni. Basically he has a societies night of a Thursday where the different societies can have their own night at the SU!

So that is the agenda for what we will be talking about next week providing i have more info from Dan!

Please attend as it's important and should be fun.

Thanks Guys!
