The Dunce

I could certainly live without you if I tried;
It is the trying that is so unthinkable.

I could learn to live alone with myself again
if I was not such a poor scholar at learning
that kind of intricate monumental lesson

The sea would surely speak the same things to my mind
and deliver up its immemorial magic as ever

with magic the sea could never own.

without choking to death on the mangled words
and losing all sense on the grief of you going.

I could find my way into books again without you
maybe into the writing of books without you
and not know the terrifying panic and sweat
of showing you what I have written.

I could begin to understand the hieroglyphics for my life
without you there to decode each symbol for me;
the little mysteries might unravel themselves
without your tender tutelage to prepare me.

Learning to live without you would be rather like
