Oct 23, 2007 7:50 AM

Greetings everyone! On November 10, 2007 C.L.A will be producing a benefit to raise funds for the AB-540 Scholarship Fund that we established a few months back. The benefit will feature musicians, speakers, art and other items for auction in hopes of raising funds to aid undocumented students in their pursuit of higher education. We invite everyone to help us with this cause. We strongly feel that education should not be limited, education should be available to all as it is one true way to progress society.
The "About a Dream Benefit" will be hosted at Antigua Coffee House from 5:30-10pm. They are located in the city of El Sereno. Their address is 4836 Huntington Drive South 90032. They are a Fair Trade coffee shop with great tasting coffee. Check out their website at antiguacoffeehouse.com or check out their Myspace, they are conveniently placed on my top friends list.
We hope you can make it. "Let us all be realists and ask for the impossible."

MADE IN L.A. New York Premiere!

After standing ovations at Silverdocs Documentary Festival and at the Los Angeles Film Festival, we’re pleased to announce Made in L.A...s New York Premiere at the New York International Latino Film Festival.

As one of the organizers in San Jose and as one of the fasters I am in disgust by his hate-speech. That's why we are taking the action of getting him fired. Read the article below for info:

YOUR CALL IS NEEDED NOW!

After weeks of negotiations, it looks like the Senate is nearing a final showdown on comprehensive immigration reform.

YOUR SENATORS NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS!

Despite weeks of effort by immigrants and advocates to help introduce a more fair bill in the Senate, Senator Reid last week filed S. 1348, which is identical to S. 2611 passed last year by the Senate. As we know, this legislation included many harsh provisions expanding detention and deportation and eroding due process. At the same time, the White House has been negotiating with Republicans and Democrats in the Senate on a separate bill that many advocates fear may be as tough on due process and detention issues and less fair on legalization provisions.

While the negotiators appeared far apart, it now looks like they may reach a compromise within the next 24-48 hours which would enable them to introduce the White House drafted bill onto the Senate floor. We understand that many provisions expanding detention and deportation and eroding due process will be included in the bill. Senator Reid filed a Motion to Proceed on debate which will be voted on tomorrow. This means that two key decisions will be made tomorrow: 1) whether immigration legislation will proceed and 2) which bill will be considered.

YOUR SENATORS NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS!

Tell your Senators that in any legislation they must restore due process to our immigration system, oppose attempts to expand mandatory detention and deportation laws, and support proposals that create a more safe and humane detention system.

Call your Senator and ask him or her to:

1) OPPOSE attempts to expand mandatory detention and deportation grounds. Support proposals that allow immigration judges to weigh circumstances in ALL individual cases.

2) SUPPORT proposals for a safe and humane detention system. Support the Sa

ASSI MARKET WORKERS WON JUDGE'S APPROVAL OF $1.475 MILLION SETTLEMENT OF CLASS ACTION

After four years of litigation, heated community protests, and on-and-off-again settlement talks, Assi Super, Inc. owner Daniel Sung Chul Rhee and his former employees have agreed to settle the workers' class action lawsuit alleging unpaid overtime wages and racial discrimination and harassment for $1.475 million. Their agreement just got a judge's preliminary approval by Judge Carolyn Kuhl at a hearing held on today Monday, April 23, at 9:30. This settlement will effectively close the chapter on the most contentious labor dispute Koreatown has seen in years.
The settlement provides that Assi will pay former workers $1.475 million, create an internal complaint system for workers, and conduct trainings for its managers on California' s wage and hour laws and how to stop employment discrimination. Assi Super is one of Koreatown's largest community-owned businesses, employing over 100 workers.

As you recall, the class action lawsuit was filed after the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance ( KIWA ) led Assi workers in a long campaign to improve working conditions at Assi Market, where many Korean American workers were not paid overtime and Latino workers were denied rest breaks, yelled at and mistreated by management. A union election ended in an official "no result" in 2002. Later that year Daniel Rhee "indefinitely suspended" 56 workers, roughly half of Assi's workforce, in what many believe was retaliation for Assi employees asserting their rights and preparing to file this lawsuit. The suspension of these workers resulted in a community-wide boycott and daily picket lines in front of the market that drew thousands of supporters over the course of the campaign.

When the Court finally orders the checks distributed to workers,
KIWA has announced
