Observations from Saturday's scrimmage Posted by Jason Quick October 06, 2007 13:31PM Categories: Team News The Blazers spent most of Saturday's practice scrimmaging, and once again, the team looked good: They are playing a faster tempo, sharing the ball and playing hard. Coach Nate McMillan, predictably, said he liked the scrimmage, but would like to see better defense. I thought center Joel Przybilla looked especially impressive Saturday. He rebounded everything in sight, blocked a follow-dunk attempt by LaMarcus Aldridge and finished a beautiful alley-oop pass from Steve Blake in the halfcourt set with an emphatic dunk. And, at the end of practice, he swished two free throws to prevent the team from having to do extra running. Channing Frye also impressed me with a nice interior post move, scoring on Przybilla, and he grabbed three offensive rebounds in the short amount of time the media was able to watch. At one point, Travis Outlaw was openly praised by McMillan for his defense, and Blake was very effective finding post men inside throughout the scrimmages. But the most noticeable facet of the scrimmage was the tempo. It is decidedly quicker than the first two years under McMillan, and after a fast break layin by Taurean Green, McMillan stopped the scrimmage to praise. "That's what we're talking about,'' McMillan said while clapping. "Attack both ways.'' Afterward, McMillan acknowledged that he wants to run more, but he cautioned that a lot of what we were seeing was because the Blazers are being forced to scrimmage with teams playing two point guards at once. "We are not going to become Phoenix,'' McMillan warned. "But we want to up the tempo a little more than the last two years.
