I'm listening closely and can hear the roots of your current guitar style in germinal form here -- a little jazzy, a little troutmaskreplica, a little Bernard Sumner maybe?

I once saw you in 1979 playing in the garden of a squat in London, must have ended up there 'cos I was friends with Doll by Doll.Their manager Bruce had the Dry Season ep and there's the rub.. in my head for years I thought you were called Dry Season not Dry Rib!!!!!!I remember the squat set being very powerful, not long after early Section 25 reminded me of you. Am I right that there you did a song called "The Dry Season?..that was great, nagging guitar riff and lovely tempo changes, Peel played it on Radio one did he not?

"Coathanger" is our new favourite song !!!
O Level ~ 1977-1980 (in…

Nov 3, 2007 1:46 PM

"LIKE SOME MYTHICAL BEAST - HALF MAN, HALF STRAT".

isn't it marvellous?!! . . . since the early '80s there's been an endless parade of glorified bank clerks in indiepop/britpop groups, revered as the 'New Prince Barrett' - well-meaning but ultimately musically-limited chaps who looked no further back than 1967 for their inspiration.

and here you are, with the mininum of fuss/fuzz, composing disconcerting dramas seamlessly attached to sinister riffs of real invention, using notes and progressions the rest of us didn't know existed . . .

yes, i get it, 'Coathanger' is your 'Glass Onion' - a joke (in Syd's sense) that everyone can share in . . . "The flies on his head were beginning to bother him . . ."

Once heard, never forgotten.

Bring back the monster to slay and rid us of all these indie wankers -

The beginning of the Vasey Experience . . .

At night, Rob Vasey and Kevin Shields are the soundtrack to my dreams.

When we put out the Dry Season ep in 1979 on my Clockwork Records I thought it was revolutionary music.

Listening to it today I KNOW it was.

All 'alternative' records from that time either sound like PopPunk, BleepPop or UnlistenableNoise - nobody could touch Dry Rib. Not even Wire.

Unfortunately, only John Peel and I knew it.

For the full experience, You've got to wait until they upload the third ep track Cruelty Of The Victim to fully appreciate exactly what I'm banging on about . . .

During the 'Eighties, Rob's As Hem Syrup with Lindsay Evans and Ray Kent excelled in qualites, of Beauty, Fear and Intangibility, pre-empting the essence of My Bloody Valentine. Only this time, even less people got to hear songs like Upwards (one of several where ontology and ornithology diverge), In Persia and Men With Coats Thrashing.

If the Messthetics label get Rob's compilation right, (and if I know Chuck Warner, he will) you lot have some catching up to do.

Then you can have Vasey and Shields soundtracking your dreams toooooo . . .
