Copy/paste this message (or write up your own): I am writing today as your constituent to ask you to cosponsor HR 1009, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007. As you may already know, industrial hemp can be made into near 25,000 products including textiles, food, fuel, plastic, building materials, cleaning products, cosmetics, and much more (including most of the components for automobiles). But because industrial hemp is a sub specie of cannabis sativa, it is also considered a controlled substance even though there is negligible amounts of THC (industrial grade, less than 1% THC), and has no mind-altering properties. If HR 1009 is passed, it will amend to the Controlled Substances Act and make industrial hemp available, under state jurisdiction, to be grown by American farmers. As it stands, the United States spends roughly 250 million dollars annually importing hemp products. It is not only practical, but economically and environmentally smart to bring this industry back to the United States. Hemp is the perfect answer to the economic problems in Michigan. Hemp as a crop would thrive in Michigan soil. Abandoned factories could be opened up again to process the raw hemp crop, or to make the endless products that hemp can produce (including automobile parts). But overall, industrial hemp will create jobs. Industrial hemp can be Michigan's new economy. The auto industry in Michigan is failing, it is time for a new plan.
