We have turned off HTML and images in the comments, to keep the page a bit more clean. Not that there were any naughty images; we've not had an issue with that. It's just a page formatting thing.
In other news: There is a limit to 50 attendees for Friday's events. If you have not registered yet, and would like to attend, please do so! Deadline is July 10.

Hoping to make it to AvCon 2009! I've never been to one, and I'm a HUGE Avonlea fan -- got friends in the TO area too, and we all have something we're going to together about 10 days after AvCon -- so I'm going out there anyway. So, ya, hopefully I can make it! Especially if its the last one!!

Canada abolishes visas for Poles
01.03.2008 11:58
Canada is to abolish visas for Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Lithuania today.
This will allow the citizens of these countries to travel to Canada and remain within its territory for 3 months without a visa.
The decision will officially be announced by Diane Finley, the Canadian minister for immigration and citizenship during her meeting with the ambassadors of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Lithuania around 6 PM CET. The decision will be valid the moment it is announced.
Later, Finley will visit the John Paul II Center in Toronto, where she will meet representatives of the Polish community, which has been long campaigning for abolishing visas. (mn)

Sullivan, CTV unveil new Anne
by: Jesse Kohl 10/15/07
CTV has acquired rights for the prequel Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning from Toronto-based Sullivan Entertainment and plans to make it a three-hour movie and television event in 2008.
The prodco found its newest Anne Shirley through a recent casting call on YouTube and a cross-Canada audition tour. Toronto's Hannah Endicott-Douglas (The Good Witch, Samantha: An American Girl) was chosen to star alongside Rachel Blanchard (7th Heaven) and Barbara Hershey (Hannah and Her Sisters), who plays Anne as a woman in her fifties reflecting on her past.
"To say that we are 'excited' about bringing the Anne of Green Gables franchise to CTV would be an understatement," said Kevin Sullivan, president of the Toronto company, in a statement, noting that he and CTVgm boss Ivan Fecan worked together at CBC in the early 1990s.
The net also picked up about 128 hours of content from Sullivan, including the original three Anne of Green Gables mini-series; the Emmy Award-winning series Road to Avonlea and The Magic Flute Diaries. Production on the new Anne title is underway.

end of story ....
...that opened with Christopher Reeve riding a galloping horse, just a few months before a riding accident left him paralyzed. But that wasn't the point of showing the clip. The point was that the episode was a parody of 19th-century melodrama.
"We went out of our way to make Avonlea tongue in cheek," Sullivan told his audience. "It was an overriding concern of the writers and myself that the show not become too sentimental or sappy."
The irony of Avonlea was worn lightly, however. It did not shake the sense, entertained by the participants of AvCon 2007, that the actors themselves were as basically good-hearted and innocent as the characters they played.
Kitty Hadley from Peterborough, N.H., discussed an episode titled "How Kissing Was Discovered" that might have raised eyebrows because one kisser, Mahonen, was 26 years old at the time and the other kisser, Gema Zamprogna (Felicity King) was 13.
"He actually kissed her on the cheek," Hadley said. "He said he was very much aware of the time period and the fact that in real life she was only 13 and he was 26, so he was being extremely careful that no part of him touched her."
"There was a real family that was on the set playing all those parts," Sullivan said. "It was a magic time when everyone really was related to each other, and they felt as strongly about each other as they were on screen."

... doctoral dissertation at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., on the subject of Canadian television exported to the U.S. She was also a serious fan of Avonlea.
"I saw it on the Disney Channel when I was a kid and then I bought the DVDs as an adult," she said. "I grew up loving Sarah Polley (a.k.a Sara Stanley) and I really wanted to be her when I was young. I just love the family values. It's a show where you don't expect anybody bad to be in it."
The theme of family values kept coming up. After John Welsman, who composed the music for the series, talked about the "gentle, old-time" quality of that music, a woman named Angel Willoughby, 31, there with her family from Brooklyn, Ont., thanked him for his work. "It's an escape. Today in the world there's so much garbage going on, and when you play that music it brings back a time of innocence."
Most moving was the testimony of a special education teacher named Jean Grant, 57, from Queensbury, N.Y. Many of her students were emotionally troubled children, veterans of foster homes. They loved the series. She told actor Michael Mahonen his character, an orphan named Gus Pike, was a particular inspiration to one young man .
"Watching Gus, there was something good for him to connect to, a role model," she said.
The next morning, an auction was held in an auditorium of the Royal Ontario Museum. An overcoat worn by character Jasper Dale went for $300 toNewmarket's Barb Watts, 52. "I have no idea," she said, when asked what she would do with it. "I bought it because I went to school with Mag Ruffman (a.k.a. Olivia King)."
Later, the audience heard from Sullivan. He talked about various episodes, including one titled "A Dark and Stormy Night," that opened with Christopher Reeve riding a galloping horse, just a few months before a riding accident left him paralyzed. But that wasn

ROAD TO AVONLEA

Driving past the towers of Jane and Finch, one takes a right turn into the 1800s. Tucked away behind those towers is Black Creek Pioneer Village, a replica of rural old-time Ontario. What better place to hold a convention of fans of The Road to Avonlea, a TV series celebrating rural old-time Prince Edward Island?
It was called AvCon 2007, the third such convention, held every two years. Ninety people had registered for it. On Saturday afternoon, about 60 participants – more than two-thirds from the United States – sat in the Garfield Weston Theatre in the Visitor's Centre listening to Ian Clark, an actor who played the character Simon Tremayne.
The series, created by Kevin Sullivan based on the books of L.M. Montgomery (also his source for his Anne of Green Gables miniseries) debuted in 1990 and lasted seven seasons.
Clark was talking about an episode titled "Hearts and Flowers," first aired in the show's fourth season. He called it a "madcap" episode. It featured a dead parrot, a hotel dance and the spinster schoolteacher Hetty King (played by Jackie Burroughs). A young woman in the audience raised her hand. "I have a question about that episode," she said. "When Hetty picks up the parrot, why does her hand turn green?'
Clark was flummoxed. "Really?" he said. "Uh, you know, it might be ... " Finally he confessed he hadn't noticed Hetty's green hand.
Afterwards I talked to the questioner, a 24-year-old from San Bernardino, Calif., named Nafissa Thompson-Spires. She is doing her d

Hi all,
I was speaking to James O'Regan (Constable Jeffries) about an actor friend of his, Keith Knight ( Rev. Fitzsimmons) whom we had invited to attend AvCon07.
Keith played Reverend Fitzsimmons in the episode "Evelyn" - where Alec's friend is killed in a boating accident and Alec assumes responsibility for his friends wife and child - much to the consternation of his wife Janet.
Keith Knight was unable to attend AvCon07 because of serious health reasons. Several years ago Kay Tremblay was also unable to attend AvCon because of health reasons and the committee and AvCon attendees asked if they could send cards or e-mails to cheer her. Since Keith Knight is also part of the "Avonlea Family", we thought it would be nice if we sent him e-mails and cards to let him know he is remembered and to wish him a successful recovery.
James O'Regan was kind enough to get the following information for any who would like to send Kieth Knight a message.

Anne of Green Gables Announcement
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A New Beginning
There is something new developing in the world of Anne…we are beginning work on the newest installation of Anne of Green Gables. That's right, there is going to be a new Anne movie!
Kevin Sullivan has written a completely original story about Anne's early years, before she was orphaned. Have you ever wondered who Anne's mother and father were? What happened to them? Did she have any brothers or sisters? The mystery will unfold when Anne finds a secret letter in the floorboards of Green Gables almost 50 years after she arrived on Prince Edward Island and changed the Cuthbert's lives forever.
THE CASTING CALL:
Sullivan Entertainment is searching for a new Anne Shirley for the prequel to the Emmy Award winning franchise Anne of Green Gables…
Sullivan is now conducting an extensive casting call on YouTube as well as performing a cross-Canada talent search in seven cities across the country with Casting Director John Buchan ("Away From Her", "Where the Truth Lies", "Being Julia"). Sullivan and Buchan will also be collecting audition submissions by mail in search of a new "kindred spirit" to play the role of the infamous Anne Shirley.
They are looking for charming actresses between the ages of 10 – 12 years to audition for the part of Anne Shirley. Auditions must be 1-2 minutes in length and must depict a portrayal of Anne through passages from the film or book. What was life like for Anne before she arrived at Green Gables? Participants have the freedom to create an Anne of their own invention.
Auditions should be submitted through YouTube under the group http://www.youtube.com/group/screentest or send a DVD / VHS submission to Sullivan Entertainment, Attention: The Next Anne Shirley, 110 Davenport Road, Toronto, Ontario, M5R 3R3 by July 20, 2007. Your submission will not be returned and
