Hey Nick, stopping by to wish you Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year!

Thanks again for your friendship, will have more student essays and projects to share in '08.

Couldn’t afford to get a gift for all my friends on MySpace, so I’m sharing Francis E.W. Harper’s “Songs for the People” …

LET me make the songs for the people,
Songs for the old and young;
Songs to stir like a battle-cry
Wherever they are sung.

Not for the clashing of sabres,
For carnage nor for strife;
But songs to thrill the hearts of men
With more abundant life.

Let me make the songs for the weary,
Amid life's fever and fret,
Till hearts shall relax their tension,
And careworn brows forget.

Let me sing for little children,
Before their footsteps stray,
Sweet anthems of love and duty,
To float o'er life's highway.

I would sing for the poor and aged,
When shadows dim their sight;
Of the bright and restful mansions,
Where there shall be no night.

Our world, so warn and weary,
Needs music, pure and strong,
To hush the jangle and discords
Of sorrow, pain, and wrong.

Music to soothe all its sorrow,
Till war and crime shall cease;
And the hearts of men grown tender
Girdle the world with peace.

Hi Mr Kristof, I'm not sure if you are aware of the recent piece on the politics of naming in Darfur by Columbia professor Mahmood Mamdani in the London Review of Books but I would like to read your rebuttal if you do write one. Thanks

I can't read some of your articles b/c I don't subscribe to Times Select. It seems a little dumb that the important information you are trying to impart, that everyone should know about, is limited to the select few that have money to pay to read. Is there any way you could post some sort of ongoing blog on your myspace page, that could work in conjunction with your NY Times job or be something you do on the side that you wouldn't get in trouble with the NYT?

If you're around for one of these events, come on by -- it would be great to see you!

Dear friends,

I would like to share with you why I love myspace. I share my ideas in my blog about Darfur and I have had the fortune of meeting Indirect Democracy. My essay on Darfur is read on this wonderful Podcast. Please visit the website and go to Podcast #26:

http://www.indirectdemocracy.podomatic.com/

and their myspace page

http://www.myspace.com/indirectdemocracy

Thank you and I hope we can work together on stopping the injustice in Darfur.

Maria

a synopsis on the podcast:

Darfur and Immigration -

After a long, and unexpected delay, Indirect Democracy is back. On this Podcast, I will cover a personal story involving a friend’s final step towards citizenship. It is important to remember all the people who come here to work and struggle to attain the American dream and be part of our collective experience as a nation. Sharing that moment with her is something I will not soon forget.

I received an essay regarding Darfur that I am proud to share. It coincides with the Global Day for Darfur that passed on April 29. The writer, named Maria Halyna, runs a website dedicated to educating us all about the tragedy of Darfur – tragedy seems like such a small word when you consider this living horror. I encourage you to visit her site and learn more: http://blog.myspace.com/mariahalynal

The music from this Podcast is entitled, “Still Waiting,” by the Greyboy Allstars. You can find their music at: www.greyboyallstars.com

As well, there is the Global Warming Update, the President’s Love Horoscope, a word from a new sponsor AND, as always, the What a Weinie Award.

Thanks for listening.

Nick, keep fighting the good fight! Your columns are one of the best things about the Times -- balanced and incisive, impassioned and thoughtful, and sometimes funny as hell (like when you raised money to pay for Bill O'Riley to visit Darfur). How many people's work really makes a difference? Yours does.

Best,
Barry

p.s. you're writing is of great value. I'm not just saying that because I want to win. I have been checking it out, and it reiterates to me somehting that I have become increasingly aware of-that it is important to put one's energy towards pursuits that have social value, in the interest of becoming a self actualized individual. Being a teacher has given me this fulfillment, but I seek it in all passions that I pursue. I hope that the next oportunity will be with you.

I think you're great and really appreciate the areas of journalism you concentrate on. I think there isn't enough coverage of or activism on these issues. I really, really wanted to apply to win the trip this year but I'm not a full time student. Thanks for not putting an age limit on it (I'm non-traditional aged) so I can apply next year when I am full time. Be safe!

Thanks for the add. It's a rare thing that we find a journalist who is willing to shed light on an issue that has been kept in the shade by the media. As a Darfur activist, I thank you and look forward to applying to your NY Times contest.

Nick,

Just want to share with you that I went to a NMUN conference at the Marriot yesterday where the speaker Amb. Donald Steinberg of the Crisis Group commended all of your efforts to help the Darfur crisis. He went on to say that, "one man can make a difference". Applause to you :)

I just read your article in the times and I think that there is too much political profitablity for the Bush Administration and others. Unfortunatley, the Isreali/Palestinian conflict will probably never end.

Hi Nick,

You were good on the Colbert Show. I think that the only way to handle an interview with Steve is to laugh at his jokes. Otherwise, he makes people look bad with his sarcasim. Again, good job.

A couple things for our myspace friends:

TimesSelect is now free for those of you with .edu e-mail addresses.

Nick was on the Stephen Colbert show Monday night to share the news about the "Win a Trip" contest. The best moment was when Colbert asked Nick:

"Have you ever though about writing about something less depressing? Because I was reading the New York Post the other day and they had a picture of a cat whose head was caught in a boot and it was adorable. And that's something I could care about, because it was an adorable picture. And it was so cute and I wanted to help that cat so badly."

You can watch Nick's response on the Comedy Central web site.

And the application link is now live. We look forward to your entries!

Younger generations ARE reading your work and are inspired to want to follow in your footsteps by dedicating their careers to reporting on stories that might help save lives. Thank you for your persistence in all you do and for reaching out beyond the NY Times demographic to try and touch the widest possible audience to spread the word about the atrocious human rights violations that continue to pervade all parts of the world.
