SPAMED! Can you ever forgive me? If so, please vote for me! I am in Round Two of The TRCoA Unsigned Artist Competition. Help me get to Round Three by clicking my face and voting for me! If I’m in the top 4 I get to play a showcase for record executives and could win 100 free hours in the studio. If I were selected, it would really help me rock some faces off, please take a second and vote.
Thanks! -Ted Hadji

The Smoking Poet Launches Winter 2008-09 Issue!

A great poem does things to you. Divine and nearly frightening things, like knotting up something inside you, or making your heart slip into an erratic beat, or catching your breath, or tremors, fevers, daydreams, sweats, inexplicable bliss.

Congratulations to the winners of TSP’s Annual Poetry Contest!

First Prize: “Northward” by Koh Xin Tian

Second Prize: “Sock Puppet” by Malcolm R. Campbell

Third Prize: “Reunion: 30 Years Too Late” by Lana Maht Wiggins

Honorable Mention: ”Selected Love Letters I’m Still Trying to Write” Kelli Russell Agondon

A special thank you to our honorary judge, poet Dorianne Laux.

Enjoy great poetry, fiction, non-fiction, book reviews, cigar reviews, and an interview with our feature artist, Sue Hughes. Watch for a new call for submissions, including our second short story contest.

The Unseen

The next time you switch on your computer, will the unseen be waiting to enter your mind or are they already there?

DI Sean Fagan investigates the ritual murder of young women and finds links between each victim and the world’s most popular computer game, Princess Kay-ling (PKL). When police high-tech units examine hard drives taken from the murder victims’ PCs, traces of subliminal psychotic induction (SPI) are found. This SPI induces victims to trust and obey characters from the PKL game. When a fourth woman is murdered in Ireland, Sean realises he hunts a serial killer capable of global influence. He also discovers the Government is aware and observing. When his own young daughters become involved, nightmare encircles him.

Extraordinary stuff … stories that have seeped over into fall from the golden parts of summer … submitted for our story contest and haunting us still … poetry that is wind and water and moon madness and seared hearts and summits … memoirs of strippers and warriors for the rights of plants (they have feelings, too?) and a musing on our entering the final stretch or a time of awakening … the very elegant art of courting a cigar, and the art on your cigar … an interview with novelist, Tish Cohen, about her second novel, Inside Out Girl, even while her first is being made into a movie … news on our annual poetry contest nearing deadline (is yours in our inbox yet?) with honorary judge, Dorianne Laux … and a library of links and resources that will take you on a literary treasure hunt.

Our first annual poetry contest ... coming soon!
The Smoking PoetSmoking Poet

Jun 30, 2008 1:55 AM

THE SMOKING POET SUMMER 2008 ISSUE

And they arrived, and kept arriving, story after story, one better than the next. We were amazed and cheered at the riches at our door. Our first annual short story contest brought us stories from all points of the globe: all corners of the United States, as well as Italy, France, China, Spain and many more. One author was 16 years old, yet his writing certainly did not bespeak his young years. Other authors had years of achievement pinned like medals to their chests—published novels, awards and prizes, publishing histories that blushed with authority. That was not our criteria of judgment, however. There was only one criterion: literary quality.

Come read winning entries by Grace Delobel, Martha Clarkson, Phil Haddock, and Paul Bowers. Also, feature author interviews with Lynn Stegner; YA author, Kate Buckley; artist-photographer, Ed Rode; fiction, non-fiction, poetry, cigar reviews, book reviews and much more. It’s our best yet and still getting better.
