Please choose one of the following questions. Include quotations from as many texts as you need – but please be careful to cite them. Go into as much detail as possible in your answers. Your answer should be at least 400 words and fully documented. Please return by email or in person by 4pm on Tuesday, May 15.
1. Choose three poems from three different periods (Romantic, Victorian, and Modern) and discuss how they are similar and different, how the author’s motivations and beliefs might have differed, and how they fit in to a survey of British Literature.
2. One of the major developments in Britain from 1750 to the modern era is the sexual revolution and the experience of women as it is expressed in literature of the period. Choose two works, one by a male author and one by a female author, and explain how gender is expressed in the work (through style, subject, focus, theme, or other characteristics).
3. The relationship of man to God has always been an important concern for British poets and other thinkers and writers. Choose at least two works (by different authors) that we have read this semester that address what you would characterize as the change over time in that relationship and how it is or has been perceived.
4. Some critics have argued that, although British literature has developed over time since the mid-ninetieth century, the Romantic period persists. The assumption argues that poets (not just in Britain but in the English-speaking world) continue to include Romantic notions of beauty, religion, sexuality, nature, and other issues in their work, as well as maintaining the Romantic ideal of keeping poetry spontaneous and emotional. Choose one Romantic writer and one other of which you are aware (from this class or beyond it) whose work continues to express Romanticism in some way.
