Proud to even be associated with such a person! I referenced Mary in a poem an excerpt from which is

I’ve delved deep into all sides of my history,
Something I believe every person should do,
As if where you’ve come from's a mystery,
Can you be sure that your heading is true?
So to knowledge of Romans and Boudica,
Add the Maroons, Garvey and Chaka Zulu,
And make sure the light of ‘lady of the lamp’ never obscures Mary Seacole from view.

I feel that the relationship between Mary and Florence is a metaphor for the whole of black history. Consciously hidden by a need for self promotion and justification.

i think the martin jennings sculpture is very beautiful also thought you might be interested in these

black history walks
Next walks: Trafalgar Square 11am 25 May/Notting Hill 2pm 25 May/
St Pauls Bank 2pm on 7 June

These fascinating and unique walks uncover the hidden connections between Africa and the infrastructure of ancient and modern London. They explore the role of Africans in building London, reveal African arctiechture, examine immigration from Roman times to the Renaissance and discuss the efforts and treatment of black soldiers in ancient and modern wars.

A few words from something I wrote that I think sums up how relevant I belive this woman both is and was in terms of acknowledging our heritage and it's importance in how define our identity.

A true hero with whom more young people need to be acquainted.

You are a true giant among my heroes.

I'm very pleased to see you are now represented on myspace.

The very great challenges you took on are only eclipsed by your very great achievements.

Your profound understanding of medicine and the craft of healing along with your skills as a surgeon, are a legacy that we and the medical establishment are still indebted to.

You blazed a trail in a time of ignorance towards disease and infection.

A hero of the day and still so evermore.

You are in my top friends space so my friends can come to know you better.

Bless you.
