David Franks: Walkabout… Online Now!

Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Wow. Just, wow.
What a great show you guys put on last night. I felt so happy for you, and gotta say, even experienced a bit of surrogate parental/ex-morris ale chaperone pride. Damn, gotta get in some jamming with you before y'all scatter off to your various colleges and other places.

Thanks for the feedback, guys, it really helps

Matt was busy with other stuff and we broke off amiably, we'll undoubtedly play with him in the future.

We're going to the studio next week to make the final mix.

new tracks are...hawt!! I freakin love that vocal break in Crooked Jack!! Good comments below on the mixing, though. What happened to your drummer? And if you want to play some more live, you should give me a call. I can give you a couple places that are great if you just wanna play.
Mike Handelman

Jan 15, 2008 8:40 PM

My Space is being weird about playing the whole tracks, as to the mixes though, its hard to hear the instruments. Like on Chris' Song, the first solo about a minute in is definitely hard to hear. In general, I'd bring up the instrumentation closer to Chris' voice. Things also sound... a little dry to my ear. The production quality is great though.

shit, I have so much to say. I think it's funny how most of your pictures were taken at my house. I also think it's funny how almost all the comments on your page are from you guys. Sick video. Nathan looks funny...his shirt's tucked in. Is Jeremy playing Chris's electric mandolin? Fuck yeah! Can I busk with you guys sometime?

Where's that video from? The little bit that's up was good, even though, yeah, it was fast as shit

but man, that was so much fun. We have to get more gigs at places where we get full sets instead of just one or two songs, get our music out there
