Sunday Funday presents …

Oct 3, 2008 8:47 PM

Sunday Funday is the not-for-profit inaugural post-clubbing chill-out monthly sunday evening event mixing live acts, DJs, dance, spoken word and circus in a student-friendly Bradford arty city centre venue. Translocating the summer festival vibe into the Love Apple Café Bar (near the Alhambra Theatre - see the map on our MySpace), action packed with all the fun of the fair, Sunday Funday is a great excuse to ditch the crap sunday night telly, and party with no stress. Open-minded, multi-cultural, multi-genre, you'll hear just about anything at our gigs. Whether it's funk, punk, reggae, hip hop, house, techno, dub, breaks, meaningful accoustic sets, or bitesized chunks of world music, we're down with all chilled-out vibes.

To reduce our carbon footprint, we showcase local acts as possible, giving maximum exposure to the stars of tomorrow, in conjunction with Fresh Milk (the Wild West Yorkshire music facilitators), we're helping new artists gain grass roots exposure. On the Sunday October the 5th bill, there's Freyed Knot headlining, plus Divine Shakras, Harris, DJ Shi'me, DJ Immi, Flloyd de Sousa, Meats, and many, many more. This time there's breakdance crew the Soul Monkeys, and future performances will include belly dance and burlesque, and live performance art. Entry is always a mere £3, with beer/lager/real ale at £2 a pint, and fresh veggie and meat hot dogs to keep thirst and hunger under check. There's no dress code, fancy dress optional but welcome.

We're not funded or sponsored in any way, and rely on the kindness and generosity of our able volunteers, so if you want Sunday Funday to suceed, show your support by turning up at the Love Apple carnival between 5 and 11pm and having one hell of a good time. Turn up, tune in, and chill!!!

Peace 'n' Love Apples,

Sunday Funday Crew

Friday 11th July: Wintermute + Fires
www. myspace. com/wintermuteband
Easily one of our best catches to date, Wintermute are currently one of the most exciting acts on the Leeds scene. Fresh from a nationwide tour supporting Oceansize and with debut Ep 'Fun With Wizard Stencils' due to be released early August, Wintermute are surely set to make it big in 2008. Support for the evening comes from promising new Hebden electro-rock outfit Fires.

"A curious combo of At The Drive-In and Interpol, splashed with a bit of Foals-ian mathletics, tight and adventurous, Wintermute are cool." NME

"...punchy and pop-infected, akin to The Futureheads poising notes at sharper angles. Ditch the doubts at the door: expect to be impressed.

Koen Holtkamp is no stranger to producing beautiful music. Expect layers of warm organic noise and found sound combine to make pieces that are both gorgeously minimalistic and endlessly deep. He's making the trip over from New York to celebrate the launch of his new album on Type records, and you'd be a fool to miss him!

Gorgeously organic music that washes over you and through you - the best of all ambient music understands the importance of holding back, of understatement, of beauty - Pausal achieve this, and more. Stunning stuff for a night of pure sonic bliss.

Forest of Sound's favourite one man laptop genius, randomNumber, comes back to regale us with his excellent and deeply inventive brand of electronica. There's a reason that he's so energetic in his performance - his music is brilliant. Simple. As.

A Forest of Sound presentation. It’ll be £5 on the door, and doors are at 8pm.

Easily one of the most important bands of our times (and we don't say that lightly), Stars of the Lid are the highpoint of the ambient genre. Their influence on the music that really matters over the last decade has been huge, and we're incredibly honoured to be hosting them again in Leeds. This gig will be very very different, and very very special. Stars of the Lid have excelled at designing subtle, minimalist epics which sound like they're being played on a single multifaceted organic instrument.
A wise man once described SOTL as "divine classical drones without the tedious intrusion of drums, or vocals.
"

The Declining Winter is the musical project of Richard Vincent Adams of Leeds UK, the co-founder of the continuing group Hood and a full time stricken office worker.
What does it sound like? Richard says "cassette tapes spilling out of the glovebox of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England, captured on Super 8 film".
He's not far off. Live he is joined by a few more people to bring the beautiful pastoral feel to life. Wonderful stuff.

A Forest of Sound presentation.
Tickets are £10 and are available from We Got Tickets and Jumbo Records.
It’ll be £12 on the doors, and doors are at 8pm.

The scorching hot and totally free Bradford and Manningham musical and sporting event "Community Sunday" is now upon us, and you'd be crazy to sit at home missing out on a whole host of music, sports and community info stalls. Taking place this Sunday between 9am and 5pm!!!, it's a not-for-profit festival with sports workshops, community stalls, live music, top DJs, and special celebrity guests. Forget the mud of Glastonbury, peeps! The entertainment happens in the comfort of one of Yorkshire's most cosy football grounds, and the highlight of the day includes a friendly footie fixture between the Manningham All Stars and Thackley AFC.

With musical acts arranged courtesy of BradFactor and Skewed Circus, soccer, workshops, an indoor cricket practice area courtesy of Yorkshire County Cricket, a climbing frame courtesy of the army, it's party time for all ages, whether you live in Manningham or Bradford, so, wherever you live, so if you like to have fun and chill out in the weekend sun, get down to the home of Bradford City AFC on Sunday the 18th of May, and let's recreate the lost spirit of Bradford Festival, making this an occasion to savour.

And remember, folks!!! It's not just an excuse to party. There will be stalls on-hand to provide careers, training and employment advice, so it's gonna kick ass!!!

Either follow the links above or search "Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire" on iTunes.

"Produced by ¡Forward, Russia!'s Tom Woodhead, debut single A Fire Born In Dallas (released on the Pay For The Piano imprint) finds post-hardcore and prog influences welded together to create a sound that is both vulnerable and self-assured. Admittedly, the usual influences of Fugazi and At The Drive-In are worn pretty obviously, but the band are far more than mere copyists.

Indeed, at their single launch they offered an intense and impassioned performance, with snare cracks and upstrokes reverberating around the venue.

Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire, it would seem, have more than enough firepower in their sonic arsenal to kick some of the music world's feted young pretenders into touch.
