Call to Action:
Sustaining Successful Raza Student Academic Programs in a Post-Unitary Status Era
Raza Studies in its 10 years has been the one successful TUSD program to have been funded by TUSD’s desegregation budget. It is critical that our communities support the programs that have proven successful; programs such as the Mexican American/ Raza Studies Department and its courses and projects (ex. Social Justice Education Project and the Raza Youth Philanthropy Project).
Therefore, it is important that the Chicano, Mexicano, and the Latino communities of TUSD provide input regarding the direction they would like to see TUSD take in the forthcoming post-unitary status era. The research has demonstrated a strong connection between significantly heightened levels of academic success for Mexicano-Chicano-Latino students and participation in Raza Studies Courses (Middle School and High School).
TUSD will host two forums to discuss the status of the district's decades-old desegregation order, “unitary status”, plans for new attendance boundaries, recent and future changes in enrollment procedures, and expanding student choices for magnet and other focus programs.
