The roots sit on an equal-tempered scale because a. it's MUCH easier that way b. it'll allow it to harmonize better with every other instrument in the world c. it means it's a hybrid vehicle. so I guess my description of it being a just intonation instrument is partially wrong; it's really a just-intoned-chord instrument (and that's why it's possible and not that big a deal to do analog; having all the roots of the chords switch to the just intonation of a different key would require artificial intelligence.)
