Although the Coal
Porters are not selling instruments or old cars we are playing, believe it or not,
the Royal Opera House tonight and tomorrow night, Nov 27 & 28, in Covent
Garden, central London.

There are thirty
tickets available to the public and we play bluegrass after the Fat Lady sings
and takes off her Viking helmet.

Onstage 9:30pm for
an hour, phone 020 7240 1200      www.roh.org.uk

Sunday November 29
the Coal Porters play the not-quite-as-posh (but just a proud) Half Moon pub in
Herne Hill, south London, as part of the three day festival there.

10 Half
Moon Lane, Herne Hill, London, SE24 9HU
020 7274 2733    www.halfmoonpub.co.uk

Please do attend a
gig if you are in the area. We sold out the famous London folk club The Magpie's
Nest last Thursday night in Islington and it was simply a splendid night.

Help us re-live the
glory at either the Royal Opera House or The Half Moon this weekend...and thanks

Stuck in a post-Sorefingers depression? Frustrated Obama didn't solved two
wars and a credit crunch in his first 100 days?
Summer almost here and the word "cellulite" frustratingly stuck on your
mind?

Then fear not! The Coal Porters are back from Colorado USA where they
recorded their next album and are ready to take on the post-Sorefingers
blues for you and your fine family. On Saturday May 16, this very Saturday,
they play bluegrass the way God intended it to be played by social
malcontents at The Green Note in fashionable Camden Town, north London, at
106 Parkway, London NW1 7AN.

The Green Note is a quaint little bistro with EXCELLENT food and a vast
array of brain-numbing beverages.

Only three minutes walk from Camden tube the Coal Porters are onstage at 8pm
and again for a second show at 10pm.
The house is cleared after the first Coal Porters performance so there are
actually two concerts this evening...allowing the hard-working punter two
complete chances to see media figure Sid Griffin, banjo virtuoso Dick Smith,
real live Scotsman (and ex-standup comic) Neil Robert Herd, bassist Jonny
Bridgwood and fiddle virtuoso Carly Frey in action!

"Spring ahead, fall behind" is a valid saying for both this coming weekend's clockwatchers and for bluegrass fans in all shapes and sizes come early April in southeast England when the Coal Porters, one of several acts alive claiming to be "the bluegrass Clash" and the only band nutty enough to claim the moniker "the world's first alt-country band", take to the stage twice in rapid succession on their home turf.

The first gig is in London, proud capital of the UK, and the second gig is in Whitstable, a town also situated by water, a town also in southeast England, a town also populated by pale people keen on cricket and real ale and a town every bit as chock full of bluegrass fanatics as London! Tickets are already selling well for both gigs, we kid you not, so don't be left out by "falling behind" but do "spring ahead" and book early. These are the last Coal Porters gig before the band flies to Colorado USA for both their MeltDown Festival performance and the recording of their new album with Ed Stasium at a secret location near Durango, Colorado (we cannot let the gutter press know where the CPs shall be or else the hotel and recording studio will be mobbed).

So please mark your calendars and wind your clocks properly!

(AP/Reuters) Washington, D.C.- President Barack Obama today announced he would be attending The Coal Porters performance this very Sunday, February 1st, at The Golden Lion, 88 Royal College Street at about 6:30pm in the always fashionable Camden Town area of London. "That's NW1 0TH, isn't it, Ms. Secretary of State?", asked the President, his eyes sadden already by the weight of expectations placed upon him.

"Yes, that's right, Mr. President," replied Hillary Clinton, "but remember it is an easy walk from the Mornington Crescent tube station. Also, sir, the phone is 0871 917 0007." The President's Secret Service agents shifted in their chairs nervously. "Sir," began Agent Wirtzy, "are you sure attending this concert by the Coal Porters is a good idea? Yes, they play bluegrass and are fun, energetic and certainly entertaining, yes, they have a virtuoso new fiddler in Miss Carly Frey, yes, they wowed 'em at The Barbican as the warm-up for the recent BBC Folk Reunion show...but is this wise, Mr. President?"

Obama turned to the window slowly and rubbed his eyes. He thought for a moment and turned back to address Agent Wirtzy after giving a nervous glance to Secretary of State Clinton. "Yes, it is the right thing to do...acoustic bluegrass is the music of the future, it is part of this grand country's DNA, it hails from Ireland and the UK, it makes you happy...if I hear another indie/funk band I am gonna cry...plus...", and here the President smiled, "plus that crazy Sid Griffin and his buddy Neil Robert Herd have the funniest stage announcements I have ever but ever heard."

"We'll be there," said the new President with certainty, "and Michele is coming with me. The Golden Lion, 88 Royal College Court about 6:30pm in Camden Town...this very Sunday Feb 1st...if only I could get Jimmy Carter to come with me."

The Coal Porters play Cardiff's The Globe on Albany Road this very Wed January 21st, tickets available from Spillers!

If any of my fellow Londoners herein are around The Barbican this very Thursday then please note at 6:15pm the Coal Porters play for free in the foyer for over an hour.
We will be performing as entertainment for folks having a coffee or one of those delightful "oat sodas" people so enjoy after work and before the main concert of McGuinn/Judy Collins/Eric Anderson et al at 7:30pm at The Barbican.

Remember ours is a family show with clean hearts, clean minds and clean suits being worn and with no swearing, spitting, dirty lyrics, suggestive shapes being thrown onstage or extreme political views being aired so bring the kids!

And I promise not to wear the swimming hat shown in the photo on the left.

best always, Sid Griffin

Hello and a Happy New Year to you. An eclectic bunch of songs new to the site this month.
