International Pow Wow is produced by the U.S. Travel Association, and is the travel industry’s premier international marketplace and the largest generator of Visit USAtravel. During three days of intensive, pre-scheduled business appointments, U.S. travel executives representing more than 1,000 supplier organizations and destinations from every region of the U.S., and representing all industry category components, meet with close to 1,500 International and Domestic Buyers from more than 70 countries. Historically, the business negotiated in these meetings results in the generation of over $3.5 billion in future Visit USAtravel. At U.S. Travel Association’s International Pow Wow, International and Domestic Buyers and U.S. Suppliers are able to conduct business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around the world trips. As you can see, International Pow Wow is NOT your typical trade show.
International Pow Wow is also an opportunity for unique news coverage for U.S. travel desti¬nations and products. On average, more than 350 travel journalists from over 40 countries attend International Pow Wow each year. Great opportunities exist for destination and product articles to appear in major international trade and consumer publications.

More than 50,000 business appointments at International Pow Wow were pre-scheduled in advance by a complex computerized program, based on Buyer and Supplier requests, to help each attending organization make the most of its time. Every organization registered for International Pow Wow is required to provide organizational business profile information that is compiled in the powwowonline.com database by U.S. Travel Association. To prepare for the appointment request and assignment process, all registration and organization profile information is included online at www.powwowonline.com

A Waldorf Astoria Experience
When we arrived at the desk he said to her: "Casey would you please assist the gentleman in remaking his room key and then escort him to the room? In fact, here is the master key in case you need it to open the door."

Pleased with the kind offer but not wanting to disturb anyone I responded: "Thank you kindly but that won't be necessary". The gentleman insisted and two minutes later Casey escorted me to the 15th floor to ensure that my room key worked and I was satisfied with the service and attention.

During the elevator ride I asked Casey the name of the gentleman who had kindly assisted me, she informed me that his name was Eric Long the General Manager. WOW! I was really impressed! I had been assisted face to face by the General Manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. What an example that Mr. Long is setting for his staff.

When I realized that I Mr. Long had personally taken care to genuinely fulfill my request, I remembered Mr. Elvis Taylor, the General Manager at the Beacon Hotel South Beach. Mr. Taylor spends every day at least one hour greeting the Beacon Hotel guests at the door and offering his assistance - he teaches by example to genuinely care for each guest of the Beacon Hotel.

I have worked in hospitality for over seven years (five with Mr. Taylor) and I have heard him speak many times about what it is like to deliver genuine service. I have attended Customer Relationship Management Courses, read books about service, and attended seminars. However, Mr. Long's personal attention left a lasting impression on me. The receiving end of genuine service feels great!

For those of us that work at the Beacon Hotel South Beach I hope that this story serves as inspiration to continue to find ways to care for our guests genuinely. For those of you who are former, current, or future guests our hotel, I hope that you too can soon experience the receiving end in an act of genuine service.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, the City of Miami invites residents, businesses and neighbors to voluntarily switch off their lights in support of Earth Hour, a global event that makes a powerful statement on climate change. Across the world, from Miami to San Francisco, Bangkok to Sydney, Tel Aviv to Copenhagen, cities are seizing this opportunity to demonstrate how we can all work together to make a positive impact in the fight against this global issue.

City of Miami Mayor Manuel A. Diaz encourages you to join him for this historic event by pledging to turn off all non-essential lights on March 28th at 8:30pm. "Earth Hour is just one step we can make to support environmental sustainability across the City," says Mayor Diaz, "it is a call to action on climate change and a more sustainable Miami."

The Earth Hour initiative is part of Mayor Diaz’s Green Agenda, which includes an aggressive push to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions, promotion of green buildings,, energy efficiency upgrades to city buildings, implementation of a Tree Master Plan to increase the city’s tree canopy to 30%, and other environmental initiatives.

This year, Miami is one of WWF's 6 Flagship American Cities, but people will be celebrating all across this country and the world. For more information please visit http://www.earthhourus.org/main.php

BEACON HOTEL TO RAISE FUNDS
FOR SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE FOUNDATION

An estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2008 alone, according to the American Cancer Society. The Beacon Hotel, a South Beach boutique hotel committed to community involvement, is doing its part to fight against this disease. Beginning in November, the hotel will raise funds for the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

The Beacon Hotel will be donating 20% of designated hotel booking proceeds to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation beginning November 1, 2008 and ending March 31, 2009.

“We’d love to raise at least $10,000 toward this worthy cause,” said Elvis Taylor, general manager.

Guests can help the Beacon contribute to the foundation by booking packages designated as “pink” on the hotel’s website, www. mybeaconhotel. com. Upon check-in, guests will receive a pink gift basket that will include awareness information provided by the foundation.

Since Taylor’s leadership in 2003, the Beacon has been actively involved in the community through the Beacon Foundation, the hotel’s community outreach arm. In four years, the Beacon has contributed $25,000 to World Vision through the sponsorship of 10 children. Additionally, hotel employees volunteer regularly with Habitat for Humanity. The hotel also works with Make a Wish Foundation. For more information on the hotel’s community outreach efforts, visit www. thebeaconlobby. com (the hotel’s blog).
