hey Jon and Mandi,

Happy Thanksgiving!

now remember, it's not fair to use martian turkeys, you'll just have to use earthling turkeys which take a lot longer to cook, like the rest of us.

Acoustic Selections

Jon takes risks adding obscure and invented instruments, acoustic and otherwise, or even things that aren't exactly instruments but become such in Jon's hands.

I think the tracks that stood out most to me were the older ones from House of Wires and Pivot Clowj. I think there was only one track I was completely unfamiliar with and that was Freedom Is The Edging To The Garden On The Right. I thought it felt like something you would hear in a concept album or rock opera.

I had heard Jon play many of the Travelogue songs live and since he likes to change things up quite a bit live with various instruments and such there were parts in the songs that were expected though surprises came in those as well because I have never heard Jon Sonnenberg music without any electronic parts. I really like the dark element to Jon's writing and I think that came out well in these selections. I guess one song that I enjoyed picking apart the most was Home with the use of the Jaw or Mouth Harp. That is an instrument I just recently picked up and always am amazed when it is played and played well since I haven't yet figured out how to play well (but I have figured out how to play it!)

I had built up a lot of anticipation because I knew that this would include a lot more than a piano or acoustic guitar. Jon brought about a large number of classical acoustic instruments that one wouldn't normally see in todays pop music scene and his inventions pop up in this release as well with the Acoustic Rhythm Machine.

It has been two years in the making but the end product is worth the wait. I feel Jon probably put his best effort by taking his time on this record. Fans of his bands would be foolish not to pick this up if for no other reason than to compare the electronic sound versus the acoustic sound. I for one found this to be a very interesting piece in the translation from electronic to acoustic.

Prometheus Project

This collaboration is pretty impressive. you can hear the difference in the two artists with style and writing but the similarities make the record flow well which is what you want with a concept record.

The Jon Sonnenberg tracks sound a bit like the electronic pop music of the past and feels very familiar though I can't put my finger on it. My favorite track is one of his in Human Form. The song in itself is very enjoyable then there is that strange part where it speeds up at the end making it into something kind of weird. I feel Jon with his inventive nature fits the role of Creator in this record. It is good to hear him go beyond the Travelogue sound of his recent years to make this record something special and different.

The Israel Slick tracks are like poetry set to electronic music and noises. The first time I saw Israel perform live I was reminded a bit of MewithoutYou who at the time was mostly spoken or yelled lyrics. Though Israel is very unconventional even by electronic standards, I enjoy what he brings to this record and I don't think it would work without him. I would assume he is an acquired taste but that is the case with all things that's not mainstream. Like him or not he is an original.

It has been sometime since there has been a new Travelogue release or Red Orchestra release but this collaboration is good in the meantime.
