When did it become a crime to clean city sidewalks and overpasses?

When it became art. Obviously. Please see NPR's report below...

PERSONAL VENDETTA GOES NOWHERE

We all know that Fred RAdTke had made it known in January "City Business" articles that his vendetta against NoLA Rising founder Michael Dingler was a personal one. It was a vendetta Mr. RAdTke claimed he would take all the way and try to financially cripple Dingler (a.k.a. ReX). In court on Thursday, May 22nd, Mr. RAdTke appeared and failed miserably in his attempt to make sure the charges he, in Mr. RAdTke's words, "citated" against ReX would stick.

RAdTke lobbied hard, providing witness testimony that highlighted HIM as the champion of the city, showing photographs and news stories of him "cleaning up" New Orleans and even going so far as to attempt to take over the prosecution's case and deal directly with the judge as though he were a lawyer.

Judge Sean P. Early would have none of it. Judge Early finally got the aggravated RAdTke to quiet. As RAdTke pled his personal case for vendetta, legal counsel for NoLA Rising (Buddy Spell of Spell & Spell) provided photographs of ReX's work to Judge Early, upon which Judge Early stated that he thought the signs were pretty and had served a purpose. RAdTke, incensed at the comment, still fought on.

RAdTke made the statement that when "we citated him, he still went on relentlessly." Disregarding RAdTke's poor use of the English language, Mr. Spell asked if he was a police officer. RAdTke refused to answer any questions from Spell, which further pressed Spell to inform him that he was not a police officer, nor should he consider acting as though he were. For future reference, my number one fan Mr. RAdTke, it's cited, not "citated."

RAdTke, ironically dressed in blue, appeared in court prepared, carrying a plastic grocery bag for a brief case. In a cheap blue button down and tacky tie, Mr. RAdTke fought a valiant and useless fight.

Hello Radtke Reaction,

I have been a friend of this site for awhile now and support some of it's opinons. Art is a wonderful thing. And we all need it in our lives. While reading the comments on this page I ran across some stuff that disturbed me. There have been comments made by Radtke that Helm Paint supports his movement. I work for Helm Paint and have for almost 6 years now. So in seeing this I asked one of the owners of Helm about Radtke's comments. And just to clairify Helm Paint DOES NOT support Radtke's movement. They are a family run local business were any and all painters/artists can buy their paint at. Radtke purchases paint from Helm that is called Oops paint. And he makes his own gray color from those paints. And just to let everyone know Helm Paint is known for doing color matches. If Radtke is planning on using a different paint color to match the side of a building, that is all his choice of the colors he would prefer to use. But as I said Helm Paint does not support his decision's in what type of profession he has choosen. Keep up the great art! And may people be inspired. Thanks for letting me vent.

Howdy everyone...

A short while back, those of us at NoLA Rising World Headquarters located here in sunny and temperate New Orleans sent a letter to Graffiti Hurts, and organization that promotes meaningful graffiti solutions in the form of public works of art and for changing the environment to make it less hospitable to graffiti.

Comic book (-esque) arch-nemesis to ReX, The Grey Ghost, often touts the following award to members of the media as part of national recognition he has received for all of the good things he does. Please read and see what they have to say:::

<span .."font-weight:bold;">From Graffiti Hurts</span>

Michael,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Operation Clean Sweep won a Graffiti Hurts award in 2004. We have not been monitoring the activities of this group since around that time.

Graffiti Hurts does not advocate any removal from private property without appropriate permission. Graffiti Hurts also encourages graffiti removal that matches paint, does not create a new canvas, and provides for changing the environment to deter further graffiti vandalism.

Regards,

AS SENT TO ME EARLIER TODAY BY AN ANONYMOUS SOURCE:

Just saw Radtke buffing in the 7th ward. He has a police officer with him. I wonder if me and you are paying for is private detail? Thought you might like to know he has NOPD watching his back, what a waste of our tax dollars.

a non profit that carries guns and needs a police escort???? Sounds fishy to me.

THIS FOLLOWING WAS JUST SENT TO ME FROM A FRIEND THAT LIVES IN ALABAMA AND IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE ONSLAUGHT OF GREY IN NEW ORLEANS:
Lee: his actions are bad...painting that gray block. That is graffiti in my eyes. Your stuff is artwork, and as you say "can be taken". I am sorry you are trying to do good for the community and a "superior feeling ass" is trying to stop you and making the real graffiti!

AS JUST EMAILED TO ME, NO EDITING, NO EMBELLISHMENTS AND SOURCE PROTECTED:

"That rat bastard Radtke has struck private property again: He grayed out the walls in the private parking lot behind the Melting Pot and the Regions Bank at 1820 St. Charles. Not that the graffiti there was very good, but he had no permission from any business there or the owner of the building to come in to our lot and paint our building.

I don't know why people like him believe they can take the law into their own hands, but something has to be done to stop him."

Thank you to the concerned citizen of New Orleans.

If Radtke is getting grants from the City of New Orleans ($10,000) and Free Port McMoran ($32,000), why does he have to work out "a deal" with Helm. Where ,exactly, is all this money going? I believe his legal weak points are clear... violence, unsightly grey vandalism, and possible mis-allocation of city funding. Collectively, who of us can focus on and expose each of these issues. Talk is only talk. He has come under fire, the time is now...read below:
<<
Commissioner Betty Norris said that despite earlier promises, Radtke has continued to paint over graffiti without getting permits from the commission or authorization from building owners, and he often has not matched his paint to a building's underlying color, leaving unsightly splotches.

Radtke also has painted over graffiti on bare brick and granite, where the commission would never authorize painting, she said. "I'm not sure I can trust you," Norris told him.
Hesdorffer said Radtke has no more right to paint over graffiti without getting permission from the commission and a building's owner than do the vandals or free-lance artists who apply graffiti in the first place.

Radtke said he is working with the French Quarter Business Association and Helm Paint and Supply Inc. to get access to a wider array of paint colors so he can do a better job of matching a building's color.

Lupin told Radtke not to do any further painting in the Quarter without getting a specific permit from the commission's staff for each site. He told the staff to ensure that in each case Radtke has written permission from a building's owner or an authorized representative.

"We don't want you to cover up the front of somebody's house with paint of a different color," Lupin told Radtke.>>

An ARTICLE from CITY BUSINESS

‘Gray Ghost’ feuds with Nola Rising creator
by Richard A. Webster Staff Writer

NEW ORLEANS - Michael Dingler knew he was in trouble when the “Gray Ghost” appeared at the Freret Street Art Market in December accompanied by Joseph Joia, a New Orleans Police Department quality of life officer.

Joia cited Dingler for more than 1,100 counts of unlawfully posting signs on telephone poles that could cost him more than $50,000 in fines.

Dingler doesn’t deny the charges. Since Hurricane Katrina he has hung hundreds of hand-painted “messages of hope” throughout the city, signs with slogans such as “Smile” and “Welcome Back.”

Dingler said the charges don’t make sense given that Joia arrived with Fred Radtke, aka the Gray Ghost, who has made a name for himself by slathering gray paint over graffiti on public and private buildings — often without property owner approval.

“When I asked Officer Joia if he was going to file the same charges against Fred under the graffiti statutes, he said he was unaware of what I was talking about,” Dingler said. “Here’s a guy who is destroying city property, who has become what he said he is fighting against. And yet I’m the one facing all these charges? It’s selective enforcement of the law.”

Radtke dismissed Dingler’s accusations, called him a “loser,” a “phony” and the “biggest pain in the ass I ever met.”

He said Dingler’s so-called “messages of hope” are “vertical trash” that promote other forms of vandalism.

“It’s real simple: People either want to abide by the law or not,” Radtke said.

Common purposes

Radtke, 52, founded the nonprofit Operation Clean Sweep in 1997 to fight graffiti.

The former Marine covers graffiti full time and depends on donations to fund his operation, including several $10,000 grants from the city of New Orleans and a $32,000 grant over a four-year period from Freeport-McMoRan.

Radtke expanded his targets after the storm from simply graffiti to sign

Fred in one breath protecting the poor scared, apathetic 'orientals'...
"Usually these kinds of businesses are owned by Orientals and they’re afraid to do anything," he says. "I must have dealt with about 30 supermarkets owned by Orientals – they run the business inside but what’s outside, they don’t want to deal with because retaliation can come back on them." That’s where Radtke can intervene, he says, using the "we" he typically uses when talking about Operation: Clean Sweep. "If we come in and paint it out, that gives the store owners a little buffer because they can say that ‘the city’ came and did it. I’m not the city, but that’s what they would probably say."

In the next breath he forces the same store owners and others to the same possibility he claims to protect them from else they face legal action...

This issue is so important to Radtke that he worked to create legislation penalizing property owners who don’t take graffiti seriously. "If they don’t take the graffiti off in 30 days, they pay $500," he says. "We did that two years ago." He’s referring to an anti-graffiti ordinance passed by the New Orleans City Council; Radtke was, confirm City Hall insiders, instrumental in making that happen.

Old Gambit article but all his interviews speak for themselves. Fred is so socially inept he has no problem sterotyping a whole geographic population as 'trembling oriental store owners with no care anything beyond their own stock' Fred you are still a dick.

krabkakes 013

I awoke this morning to some very sad and tragic news, that our friend and ally, the Baron von Krabkakes, has passed into the eternal arms of heaven. Here is the official notice as it appeared in the People's Paper of Krabstonia:

<span .."font-weight:bold;">Our dear friend and ally, firm though fair dictator of the Republic of Crabstonia, chicken conqueror, White Girls producer, horse track enthusiast, Celine Dion fanatic, Baron von Crabcakes, known to his loved ones as 'the Crabster,' passed away around 12:30am, Tuesday the 27th of November in this year of our lord 2007.

Crabcakes was suffering recently from many french fry-induced illnesses. Crabcakes was born in the early 50's in an undisclosed bunker in the former Soviet Union. He left Crabstonia as a young kitten and made a name for himself in the Afghani Mojahedin in the mid 70's. From there he traveled Europe and North Africa eventually winding up in LA where he supported himself by selling cocaine and quaaludes to the almost rich and famous.

A life of fast took a toll on the Crabs and in 2003 he retired in a quaint Southern town in North Florida, Tallahassee. This is where Crabster's life took a fresh new turn. One night, Crabster was busted selling homemade moonshine to some local raccoons. He was promptly convicted and imprisoned in the North Florida Animal Shelter. By chance, a Ms. "Y", kitty-scout for Mr. "X", discovered him, caught whiff of that famed Crabcakes moxy, and made a plan to break him out. With Mr. "X"'s relentless support, Crabcakes assumed power of Crabstonia in a bloodless coup in 2

Has anyone heard of the “Grey Ghost”? Do you know who he is? I first learned of his existence through a publicized response to his actions in Section 8 magazine. He is an ex Marine/activist of some sort that has taken it upon himself to rid the city of graffiti and illegal signs. He does this by painting grey over what he deems unsightly or illegal. Sounds harmless enough, perhaps even virtuous, right? He calls this effort “Operation Clean Sweep” and he’s been at it for ten years now. His name is Fred Radtke. And while his intentions may be good, his actions are definitely not.

So I was up at the odd hour of 9:30am when I was driving down Port St. in Marigny when I come to this stop sign at Royal and some WHITE ECONOLINE-style FORD with WHITE BUTCHERS PAPER COVERING THE WINDOWS is stopped at the Stop sign. I honk, and a man in a YELLOW T-SHIRT (reading something like "Clean Team" or similar) gets out and buffs the stop sign while blocking traffic. He gets in the van and the driver drives the two of them further up Port St. where he continues to buff the next few stop signs. It was the prime time to doodle in the wet paint. I guess it would have been the prime time to jump out and write something on the back of the van while they were focusing their energy on the stop sign- but I'm not as quick as that.
