Indigenous Peoples Message to the U.S. antiwar movement

We call on the U.S. antiwar movement to acknowledge that the very establishment of the United States and it's expansion was built on the genocide against the First Nations/Indigenous Peoples of the continent, along with the enslavement of African peoples & exploitation of peoples from around the globe.

Iraq (and the over 130 countries that have a presence of U.S. military) is just a continuation of "Manifest Destiny" which cleared the continent for settler colonization. Thus it's not a "mistake" of U.S. policy, but is at the core of the very foundation of the U.S. from it's beginnings continuing thru to today.

Thus, we say that the antiwar mobilizations that are taking place in March/April 2008

1)have an indigenous person opening the events ackowledging the above history and it's continuation into the present day and how U.S. history is linked to today's war(s).

2)that there be an organized and visible collective presence of contingents focused on indigenous peoples concerns at the mobilizations along with that presence being also on the websites, press releases, media spokespeople, et. al of these groups/mobilizations.

3)that the indigenous names of cities/towns in the various indigenous languages be acknowledged by also being mentioned to remind people of the indigenous origins of this land (for example "Manatay" for what is now called Manhattan ) along with the peoples (for example: Lenape (& others)) and the original languages.

Thank you for the add. Hope you had a great holiday season and a Happy New Year. Here at Operation Ward 57 (www.operationward57.org) we were able to bring holiday cheer those who deal with the trauma of war on a daily basis; the amputee soldiers and nurses on Ward 57 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. We know that the holidays have passed, but these brave heroes are still in need of support. Please check out our myspace and the link to the web site and see what you can do. Thank you and we wish you the best in the new year.

Through the above link you will see the boy and the mother who inspired this poem. I dedicate it to his memory and to all those who have suffered from the brutal agenda of the Bush administration...Stay strong and good luck at your event.

At a morgue in Baghdad,
Wafaa Hussein cradles her son,
6-year-old Thaer was shot to
Death by a sniper's gun.

I can't understand her words,
But our tears are the same,
I don't have the answers,
But my heart feels her pain.

My own son McCabe,
Turned 6 two days before
And 2 days later,
She had her baby no more.

As she looks up at me,
I see the questions in her eyes.
How can I tell her?
This is because of US government lies?

That oil means more to them
Than her precious son's life?
That greed for power and money
Have caused all her strife?

How can I stand by,
And watch corporate interests destroy,
All the dreams and securities
Of Iraq girls and boys?

I can't speak her language,
but our enemies the same.
I don't know her religion,
But our ideals are the same.

That every child
Lives in peace and love.
That we all have equality and freedom,
No matter who our prayers are sent to above.

A US soldier's casket,
A mother clutching a flag,
In her face I see the pain,
Of that mother in Baghdad.

And we know the truth,
We see the white of their lies.
They said they'd kills us first,
When will we realize?

Somewhere in New Orleans,
A mother cradles her son,
She's screamin from her house top,
But nobody comes.

The waters are risin,
And so are her fears,
How could her own people,
Abandon her here?

I can't see her on TV,
But our angers the same,
She looks different than me,
But our blood is the same.

How can I sit by?
While my brothers and sisters die?
No matter what color, religion, location,
We're harmed by thier lies.

We are all a family,

I wanted to tell you that I attended a peace march on the 27th of October. I was deeply moved by the Iraq Veteran who spoke out against the war and stood up for peace and justice. It awoke something inside of me. If we have our proud soldiers on our side, we can accomplish anything. I wanted to also say that your sacrifices have made this world a safer place. I admire your strength to make these difficult decisions. A lot of soldiers I have talked to haven't even questioned if the war is illegal or not. Thank you for thinking for yourselves and making the just decision.

Peace and love, forever and always!
