Don’t tell Jumah al-Dossari there is no hell. He says he’s been there.

The 34-year-old native of Saudi Arabia, who lived six months in Bloomington in parts of 2000 and 2001, spent five and a half years in the U.S. detention facility at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba as a suspected terrorist.

During that time, from January 2002 to July 2007, he says, he was tortured, humiliated and driven to such despair that he attempted suicide three times.

“Those were dark days,” he said during a recent phone interview from his home in Saudi Arabia. “It was like being in hell.”

In October of 2005, he tried to end his life by hanging himself with a makeshift noose and slashing his right arm with a piece of metal. The attempt failed when his attorney, Joshua Colangelo-Bryan, found him limp and bleeding in a bathroom.

In the ensuing months, Dossari tried to take his life two more times, once by slashing his throat. He said his isolation from other people, coupled with the fear that he might never be released, drained his will to live.

“I don’t like to talk about my suicide attempts because it brings back too much pain,” he said. “I just thank God, from the deepest part of my heart, that I did not die from those attempts.”

In a 26-page hand-written account of his years at Guantanamo Bay, written in 2005 while he was still being held at the detention facility, he describes horrors so painful that his mind balks at taking their measure. The U.S. Defense Department sees it differently, describing him as recalcitrant when at Guantanamo.

His account of his time there was given to Amnesty International by his attorney. Here is an excerpt:

Thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — particularly those in public office — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief; they use it to justify themselves, to manipulate us, to shape the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. ¶ But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. (I've been sending out emails to promote ideas by Lakoff, Waldman, & Hartmann about *how* to spread the word.) ¶ In the ideological struggle, no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement, if you haven't already: get involved in whatever way feels right for you. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world.
¶ For now, let's see if this meme will spread: "CLOSE GITMO BY BASTILLE DAY. PASS IT ON.
" ¶ Love, Eric

Indigenous Peoples Message to the U.S. antiwar movement

We call on the U.S. antiwar movement to acknowledge that the very establishment of the United States and it's expansion was built on the genocide against the First Nations/Indigenous Peoples of the continent, along with the enslavement of African peoples & exploitation of peoples from around the globe.

Iraq (and the over 130 countries that have a presence of U.S. military) is just a continuation of "Manifest Destiny" which cleared the continent for settler colonization. Thus it's not a "mistake" of U.S. policy, but is at the core of the very foundation of the U.S. from it's beginnings continuing thru to today.

Thus, we say that the antiwar mobilizations that are taking place in March/April 2008

1)have an indigenous person opening the events ackowledging the above history and it's continuation into the present day and how U.S. history is linked to today's war(s).

2)that there be an organized and visible collective presence of contingents focused on indigenous peoples concerns at the mobilizations along with that presence being also on the websites, press releases, media spokespeople, et. al of these groups/mobilizations.

3)that the indigenous names of cities/towns in the various indigenous languages be acknowledged by also being mentioned to remind people of the indigenous origins of this land (for example "Manatay" for what is now called Manhattan ) along with the peoples (for example: Lenape (& others)) and the original languages.

We've now had 5 years of lies about Iraq: 9/11, WMD's, freedom. The real reasons were oil, profiteering, fascism. Not just Bush, but the news media, most of congress, and all who remain silent. And now they'll use fear to quash dissent. It's nothing new -- it's been going on for ages. War, poverty, ecocide, arrogant bullying --they're all from greed and fear, which come from ignorance. ♥ But it's not too late -- we can still learn to make peace. Talk with people. Love, Eric

PASS IT ON:
NPR public radio's program "All things considered" has a segment called vocal impressions. Next weeks impressions are of the presidential candidates but they left out Mike Gravel!!!
Every other candidate is represented! Go to their site right now and flood them with descriptions of Mike's voice and tell them how ashamed you are of them as they are just as bad as corporate media for excluding a candidate!!

I just watched "Road to Guantanamo."

How will our country ever justify this? How will we ever recover the respect of the world? I am angry. I think anyone of conscience who watches this will be angry too. The United States is essentially running a concentration camp in Cuba, using Gestapo tactics in order to gain some miniscule edge in the War on Terror that can never make up for the loss of prestige we are suffering as a result of this. Shame.

Washington Transcripts (What is really being said in DC)

This World Health Organization report, the one that calculates 223,000 Iraqi civilians killed since we invaded, is outrageous! Of course, we don’t give estimates of civilian deaths, but our President he figures 30,000. President Bush keeps track. He personally regrets even this small loss of life. He counts. He is a compassionate conservative leader. Now go forth and let his compassion shine forth. Good spin. Good spin. Damn good spin!

From DivertingBuddha’s blog, the space all about Washington political hacks betraying democracy!

Artist: The Byrds
Song: Chimes of Freedom
Album: The Byrds - Greatest Hits

Far between sundown’s finish and midnight’s broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing

As majestic bells of bolts, struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing

Flashing for the warriors, whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight

And for each and every underdog soldier in the night
We gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Even though a cloud’s white curtain in a far off corner flashed
And the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting

Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting

Starry eyed and laughing, as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended

And we listened one last time, and we watched with one last look
Spellbound and swallowed till the tolling ended

Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones and worse

And for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
We gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

LET THEM GO!!
