Thank you for being a friend. I look forward to getting to know you and your community.

During this month, I have my usual monthly contest. You can win 3 books but you have to enter before the end of September. I’ve listed some of the contests I have found on the websites of this month’s authors at the end of my contest so even if you don’t win mine, you might win something from one of them. Just follow the links for more details. Plus, I’ll keep you informed of when authors are doing a blog or book signing. I usually tell you about them in my status unless it is a busy day then I will post a bulletin. And, as a bonus, Blythe Gifford shared some of her knowledge of 14th century frat boys with me, so be sure to check out the blog for the fun facts!

Libraries are magical places. There's nothing quite like strolling the hushed aisles, letting your eye rove along dimly lit shelves. Each spine, each title, seems to beckon with a promise of incredible wonders, surprsies, and adventures. -John Jakeson

Thanks for adding me, Wallace Public Library. It's great to connect with other people who love books!

At the website for my upcoming novel -- www.howtobuyaloveofreading.com -- I'm inviting submissions of stories about how reading changed people's lives in some way – or even “saved” them. I'd love it if your librarians and patrons added their voices.

And if you have a few minutes, I'm hoping the trailer below will make you (especially the librarians) laugh:

Just curious as to what happened to the downstairs "Youth Center"? What does it contain now? My Mom and Dad used to run it....Richard and Debbie Pearson......My NOW 16yr old daughter Breeanna had her 5th Birthday Party there when my DAD still ran it. I am sure it is missed ALOT!!! There are many stories of the Youth Center back in the day......

I'm reading "Beowulf" today... so quotable (and humbling) . . .

"There is no easy way, to flee fro one's fate-try as one may-but every soul-bearer...
is destined to seek his appointed place, compelled by necessity..." (Part XV - Lines 1002-1008)

And why do libraries make such good friends? Well, they just love to share and they cooperate and they keep you informed and ... The list just goes on and on.

Oooh! I hope you don't mind, old friend . . . They say "copy-cat" is the ultimate flattery? Well, I just loved your discovery of the myspace sites for ALA and Auntie's Bkstore, so (yep, you guessed it) I requested their myspace friendship too... Hope you'll still talk to me.... In fair "trade" I'd like to point out two most AWESOME bookstores I have adored for years, and discovered also have myspace sites: "Bookmans" and "Powells"

In my gratefulness for your friendship and this new website, I share this quote from:

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) English poet & critic, best known for his works "Kubla Khan" & "The Rhine of the Ancient Mariner"

(begin quote)

Readers may be divided into 4 classes:

1.) Sponges, who absorb all that they read and return it in nearly the same state, only a little dirtied.

2.) Sand-glasses, who retain nothing and are content to get through a book for the sake of getting through the time.

3.) Strain-bags, who retain merely the dregs of what they read.

4.) Mogul diamonds, equally rare and valuable, who profit by what they read, and enable others to profit by it also.

(End quote - a favorite, indeed!)
