HSQ	Oct 9, 2008 9:22 PM WHERE DEMOCRACY ISN'T -------------------------- AIG's $440,000 Bill for Executive Spa Retreat - This, after the got a $85 billion bailout to prevent them from going into bankruptcy. I don't know yet what enrages me more, the fact that they lacked the common sense to not go on holiday, or the shameful excuse of a letter that was sent to U.S Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson from AIG's chairman (who obviously also lacks common sense). The letter indicated that: 1) only 10 AIG employees went, and 2) the trip was preplanned. My response: 1) It doesn't matter how many AIG employees went. The fact of the matter is, the tab was still on AIG. And AIG used OUR money to fund this over-the-top excursion for their already way-too-overpaid executives and other business associates. 2) If the Titanic is sinking, you don't carry on partying while everyone's plummeting to their demise. What kind of insane logic is that? I don't care if the trip had been engraved in stone by Moses himself. As a financial institution, it is their duty to be aware of their finances. As a company that is getting a massive government bailout, it is their responsibility to ensure that every penny is spent wisely. That $440,000 could have kept so many jobs. So what was more important to them, vacationing and giving the royal treatment to the very people who got them in a mess to begin with,or using that money to ensure that not another American went home that night, ashamed at having lost his job and scared to death not knowing how he'd make his next mortgage payment...knowing there wouldn't be a bailout for his family. Obviously no lesson has been learned by corporate America, except that Daddy Warbucks, aka Uncle Sam, will come to their rescue if they screw up. In the meantime, who's going to help us?
