We used to comment each other a lot, back in the day. And since your page is utterly lacking in recent comments, and more importantly does not have nearly enough comments from me, I thought I would leave you one. :)
Hope you're having a great day!

Yep, there is a band frat. It's just an honorary frat though (meaning there's no house, but they do a lot of service projects). And as for the Sousas not having a website, well, maybe if you join the section you can make it happen.
=)
Sounds like a pretty good idea. Let me know how that goes. And let me know when ur at the U. Might see if I can squeeze you in to my busy schedule.
lol
But seriously, do!
Oh, and did I mention that the director of the marching band is a tuba player? lol
=)

Here's the link for HMB's website, in case you haven't already seen it. There's some info about the band, some certain traditions, individual section websites, and other things. If you go to the section labeled "Recruitment", you can actually leave your information so you can register for auditions.
So check it out, think about it.
Good luck deciding! And I'm glad to know you're seriously considering UW!

Good. We'll say you practiced for me since I didn't hahahaha.
I really really hope there isn't a piano test this week. I am hopelessly behind if there is... I've basically only been working on technique, and even that is super shabby.
I've done plenty of research for a project due in three months though lol.

Same here.
I desperately don't want to write this paper. Or practice piano. But I have to. So I keep trying to put it off like that's really going to make it go away...

Hmm yeah it was a little later than the sackbut... we're talking mid-late 1800s after all... but yeah that's about the same timbre.

It has a really gravelly tone... and I haven't heard any recording but the authentic instrument that makes it sound as obnoxious and toneless. It's supposed to be like a cruel guffaw, and the modern trombone isn't the same... too tame. Kind of like the tubas. A friend of mine and I had this conversation... I was saying how I really wish we could do Symphonie Fantastique as our "major work" at the concert at the end of the year, but I don't think I could live with the modern instruments...
Music classes are ruining me!!!
justi-fied
Oct 26, 2008 9:03 PM
Yeah... a lot of the parts in Symphonie Fantastique find their way into excerpt books for lots of instruments... the Eb clarinet solo in the fifth movement is definitely one of the most insane clarinet solos (especially since it's for Eb).
The authentic trombone in the fourth movement is really awesome, too... and just can't be replicated on modern instruments. I'm in the process of finding a recording of authentic instruments...
Symphonie Fantastique is now one of my favourite pieces of all time... along with Carmina Burana and Pines of Rome...

So how exactly did you guys do yesterday...?
justi-fied
Oct 26, 2008 3:58 PM
I noticed your comment on Brandon's page... and I'd like to point out that the "tuba" solo in Mvt. V of Symphonie Fantastique is just a lame substitution for the serpent and ophicleide.
After hearing the real version on authentic instruments, I'm having trouble accepting anything else... lol. In music history, we had to listen to the authentic version, then the Berlin Phil... and I was disgusted with the Berlin Phil after being amazed with the authentic instrumentation... ahahahaha.
Although the REALLY awesome part about Symphonie Fantastique is that it was a major turning point in music... it was one of the first pieces to use col legno and the English horn, and the harmonies and chord progressions were quite novel...
