'Listen, cunt!' I said, 'before you start your jeering
the reason why I want this in a book
's to give ungrateful cunts like you a hearing!'
A book, yer stupid cunt, 's not worth a fuck!

'The only reason why I write this poem at all
on yobs like you who do the dirt on death
's to give some higher meaning to your scrawl.'
Don't fucking bother, cunt! Don't waste your breath!

'You piss-artist skinhead cunt, you wouldn't know
and it doesn't fucking matter if you do,
the skin and poet united fucking Rimbaud
but the autre that je est is fucking you.'

Excerpt from Tony Harrison's 'v'. Read in the same stoned study of Luke Haines's 'Leeds United'.

Aspirations, cunt! Folk on t'fucking dole
'ave got about as much scope to aspire
above the shit they're dumped in, cunt, as coal
aspires to be chucked on t'fucking fire.

'OK, forget the aspirations. Look, I know
United's losing gets you fans incensed
and how far the HARP inside you makes you go
but all these Vs: against! against! against!

Ah'll tell yer then what really riles a bloke.
It's reading on their graves the jobs they did –
Butcher, publican and baker. Me, I'll croak
doing t'same nowt ah do now as a kid.

'ard birth ah wor, mi mam says, almost killed 'er.
Death after life on t'dole won't seem as 'ard!
Look at this cunt, Wordsworth, organ builder,
This fucking 'aberdasher Appleyard!

If mi mam's up there, don't want to meet 'er
listening to me list mi dirty deeds,
and 'ave to pipe up to St fucking Peter
ah've been on t'dole all mi life in fucking Leeds!

Then t'Alleluias stick in t'angels' gobs.
When dole-wallahs fuck off to the void
What'll t'mason carve up for their jobs?
The cunts who lieth 'ere wor unemployed?

This lot worked at one job all life through.
Byron, 'Tanner', 'Lieth 'ere interred'.
They'll chisel fucking poet when they do you
and that, yer cunt, 's a crude four-letter word.

'Listen, cunt!' I said, 'before you start your jeering<br

The album: unsurprisingly epic.
"Klaus Kinski" is one of the loveliest songs I've ever heard, alchemically transforming a radiantly sociopathic artist's bad attitude into a triumph of the human spirit.
Thank you for making art-magic and song-craft such a dangerous combination.
We'll follow your oeuvre anywhere.

right-alright.  no-one's done it yet, and i'm quite suprised:

21st-century-man is perhaps your best album.
i never know music could sound quite so good as that.
really!
for a while now you and bowie have been neck-to-neck for being my favorite artist.  now that you've made a proper glam album (proper in the sense that it sounds like it ACTually CAME from the 70's) you've finally beat him out.

Yousef - check your hotmail later. I'll send you some chords through when I get home from work...
yousefyousef Al-Janabi

Oct 12, 2009 9:46 PM

Yes man, I would love them.

I have worked out the Rubettes: A, F#m, A, F#m, Bm, E, -- and then A again for the sugar baby love part etc back into E and repeat. I could send you this tabbed out properly if you don't already know it, (which i presume that you probably already do).

PLEASE send me what you've got to 'badseed83@hotmail.com'. Any haines/auteurs guitar chords/tabs tend to keep me amused for hours as well pal.

It is a shame there isn't a good forum where all this can be shared. I see Richard Hawley has such a forum where he confirms his own chords etc, and the frankblack.net site is perfect for anything frankblack/pixies related. Sure, it's good fun working them out but not when ur as shit as me. lol.

Sum black box recorder stuff wud be great too. british racing green is an incredible track.... 'Everybody's gotta dream, something something love, and eight hours sleep' ahh, it's all brilliant.

You wouldn't be sound enough to work out the UPPER CLASSES would ya??? lol. YSF

Yousef - if you would like some chords for the 'New Wave'- 'Murder Park' era PM me as I have pretty much worked out a bunch of them;

'Bailed Out', 'Junk Shop Clothes', 'New French Girlfriend', 'Modern History', 'Home Again', 'Unsolved Child Murder' and 'Bhudda' are the ones I have nailed...

Not sat down with The Bootboys yet though...

They are all really pleasing to hammer out on your guitar, because they are pretty much perfectly constructed songs....

Keep it new wave...

Aaron/Slickster -
Defo agree, and get a massive buzz that you guys recognise some of this stuff too.
There's many instances of this kinda 'cathartic - point of excelsion' in Haines's music, don't ya's think?
I mean, I haven't got a copy of much stuff here with me, but I think on Back With the Killer - when he says some stuff like
 - Nerve Gas monday morning, takes the sting out of Saturday night  - I walk around like Carl Walker. That's equally amazing.
More accurately however; In Married to a Lazy Lover, when he says 'It's a 'NATIONAL THREAT' -
I just can't help seeing this frenzy of flickering images of post-urban insanity, truly cathartic - the music is the best i've ever heard.
I think possibley there are aspects of Iggy Pop and Frank Black's early solo albums that probably come close, but certainly they are not quite Haines.

If ya revisit 'Bailed Out' there's a point at 3:40 where he says, "I'd like to see something change ..." and such reflection contrasts with the other wise acerbic repetitons of that comprised the earlier part of the track. narratively, it is incredible.

One last thing, At around 1min 35 on 'MEET ME AT THE AIRPORT' well, I don't even need to say... just listen it to it! DO IT FOR GOD, DO IT ALLAH. the standard of guitar/the vision/the snarling cathartic misanthrophic negaitvity just takes the piss out of everything else really. Superb .lolol. x

p.s add me on facebook guys, my name is Yousef Al-Janabi.
