Le songwriting entretient un rapport constant entre l'évocation presque naîve de plaisirs simples et une poésie marquée par une anxiété typiquement urbaine. Résidant aujourd'hui à Paris, Lauter se produit essentiellement en solo (chant, guitare, banjo) ou en groupe avec entre autres des membres du label strasbourgeois Herzfeld.
