The Allied Army hoped to end World War II by December 1944, just in time for Christmas. But the Allies did not know that Hitler was planning his last great offensive to try and turn back the invading Allied forces. The resulting month-long conflict is popularly known as the Battle of the Bulge.
On December 16, 1944, the German Army attacked the Allies through the Ardennes Forest of Belgium. The German Army initially plowed down the Allies, creating a bulge in the Allied defensive lines. Within a month, the Allied Army, largely made up of U.S. soldiers, pushed back the Germans and closed the bulge in the line of defense.
By the end of January 1945, Hitler had ordered a retreat and new Allied forces refreshed the battle-worn and frost-bitten soldiers. The Battle of the Bulge is one of the greatest examples of American endurance through harsh and deadly conditions.

The air grew colder,

The ones we have casual conversations with, a brief hello and a wave in passing.

The ones that we converse with regularly, that we are comfortable with and would stop to help whenever asked.

Then there are the ones who know our inner most secrets and love us anyway, the people who would do anything for us, even when we didn't ask for their help.  These are the friends who stand up with us when the rest of the world is against us.
