You will be happy to know on March 11th, 2010 I play at The World Famous Ponderosa Lounge in PDX, and they definately understand paying their performers far better than I have heard any PDX venue offer.

Definately a venue helping not hindering the artists of Portland, its always a pleasure to work with a venue that understands paying the artist as any other employee would be paid for their time, talent, and ability.

Best,
Peter

Hope to see you at the next FTM happy hour.  We need a standard so musicians & bands can determine what "fair pay" at clubs should be.  Keep up the good work!

Any ideas on how we determine what is "fair"?  Obviously, I can work for whatever amount I feel is right, and more talented musicians can hold out for more money, but how do I determine how much I am worth for a two hour set?

Thanks for the request. Lets see where do I start. If they aren't going to pay you to play, then dont show up. Battle of the bands should include more weapons and everyone beating the shit out of the people who promote these shows and the clubs that allow it.

I think what you are doing is AWESOME, I take exception to coments made bv the band "Drunk on Power", we DON'T need the kind of Cynasism that THEY represent.
COME ON "Drunk on Power", stop acting like a Corporate Whore, and start behaving like the "In Your Face" rock band that you pretend to be! MUSICIANS UNITE!

We LOVE what you guys are doing, but think you should involve the booking agents and club owners as well. Musicians are only 1/3 of the equation... I say that as a musician and booking agent. Keep up the good work!

it looks like you have foiled my plans of getting high school rock bands to pay me money to play some bullshit "battle of the bands" show on a sunday afternoon.can you say chickenhawk,i mean promoter.why not rent a venue, promote your own show, and keep all the money.its unfortunate that the world isnt fair.that being said,if you dont have the leverage to bargain with, put together your own show.entertainment is a business.why not go into business for yourself and be the master of your own destiny.i would love to regulate the entertainment business, but there will always be musicians that are willing to perform for free if no one is willing to pay them.and there will always be people who figure out a way to make money from it.i'll be glad to help in any way i can.

Lets hope this starts a fire under all bands to quit paying to play.I don't care if "your not doing it for the money",I am after 20 years of learning a craft.Lets see here,$6 for strings, tubes cost, amps and guitars aren't cheap, ect. And with the growing number of musicians with kids, come on.One more thing, can't bring a draw on sunday to prove ones self because most people work monday, just baffled at what an establishment is thinking.Remember GG Allen folks! He knew how to get your attention.Later

People need tools to work with in order to get this off the ground... do you have other suggestions besides asking for a minimum wage? For example, it is easy to get musicians to like this idea... if there were venues in PDX that would jump on the bandwagon, too, it would be easier to make change. Granted, hard times equate to less pay in general, I'm finding... how do you ensure minimum wage from bar owners? It seems to me that you have to accept less pay initially, in order to just be heard. Then you blow them away and they realize that they must pay you in order to have you back... I don't know very much yet... a monthly email or article would be great to see... with other artists contributing experiences and tips for easing the booking process, suggesting favorite places. In the competitive world of music, who really wins? I would say, most of the time, it is the audience when musicians are not treated fairly. I support this %100 and ask for more information, details, experiences, and monthly meetings... get the people together... okay, im done with my tangent. I apologize, I'm pretty intense sometimes... Thanks for the request. How do you get through to musicians who play for nothing, or next to nothing, that they're hurting everybody else? All I hear is, "It ain't about the money for me, I just love to play." Good for you, other folks are trying to make a living.
