The Marcia Blaine School For Girls Halfway Into The Woods (Highpoint Lowlife) Inexplicably named after the educational establishment where the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was set, this Glasgow trio are far-removed from the world of school songs and morning assemblies. Indeed, some of the more dubious ladies - think St Trinians - might have been fans of this chillout music if they escaped down their local rave. Electronic music is something of a minefield to review, with bands often taking offence at being pigeonholed, but here we go anyway. The opening tracks are in the glitchcore vein landing somewhere between Auterche and their near neighbours Frog Pocket, but soon it’s clear they’re no one-trick pony, with 'Still' crashlanding into another genre - splattercore, I believe they call it - and Yellow Magic Orchestra-esque breakbeats. Then, the most surprising event yet - 'Last Game of Mercy' is, like, a proper SONG - with words and vocals and singing and everything, as the dark intonations are pop enough to elicit comparisons with New Order. 'Speed is Distance' is another conundrum, ghostly voices reverberating over an IDM soundtrack. But that’s this album all over, a melange of incessant beats and warm thrumming - that’s another thing, these tunes may be made by machines but this is human, warm, breathing music, and carving out a whole new genre for itself to boot. as Miss Jean Brodie would herself have said, the “crème de la crème.” [
