Just added a Bibliography, Discography, and Filmography section to Jesse's wikipedia, it looks prolific and yet it isn't even complete!

Fans of Mr. Bernstein, thanks for accepting my request!
I'm surprised I haven' stumbled on your site sooner. His incredible, beautiful brain -- in fact the very quote you posted for me -- has always served as a benchmark (or at least a goal) for my own endeavors.
Thanks again!

I'm often selfish when it comes to art. I become secretive and possessive about a lot of things, particularly if they're things I've stumbled across myself: precious little discoveries that I usually hide from the world.
When I first came across 'Prison' in the early 1990s, it wasn't like that at all. I genuinely became evangelical about Bernstein's work; I just couldn't get enough people to hear it. To me, that was the difference between 'art as entertainment'; and 'art that mattered';. I truly felt that those words did matter as they'd really changed the way I listened to 'words/poetry'; and where I looked for them. I just wanted those words to change other people as they'd changed me.
He was a great talent.

Lollapallooza, 1992. Washington State, mud and rain. I was on a nice dose of LSD. Soundgarden just roared thru a set including Jesus Christ Pose. Suddenly, "The Sport" came through the amplifiers. OMG. James Joyce meets Public Enemy? Steven Jesse Bernstein is a fundamental element of American Poetry. Celebrate his life, a work of stunning brilliance.

The Secret Agent Artist must be brave and lead the Insurrection against those who seek the termination of all clairvoyant insight required for social mutation. When one's back is against the wall, when it appears impossible to sustain the momentum necessary to rip the cloak off the Ruling Class, it is at that exact moment critical to hurl one's lifeforce against the Fortress of the Impossible. We must sizzle the serenity of sameness and smash the Media Phalanx to rubble. By looping language into an Incantation of Becoming we can shatter the Idiot Kingdom casting its hypnotic shadow across this delusional domain.

Jesse, my wife Nancy Hall, and I were friends in Seattle during the 80s and up until that terrible day when he made his choice. I remember one night he called me up very late asking me if I could come over and help him talk to the teenaged son of the woman he was living with. He really cared a lot that he was not making a good connection with him was just overcome with the need to fix it. So he called me because he said needed a "Good man" to help him. I remember how good that felt. As much as I admired Jesse's sheer artisitry and the strength of his personality, it was an instant honor to be considered by him in this way. Jesse could be SO much fun to be around. I'll always miss him.

i was a program director at a public radio station when the record came out.
i was dismayed after reading the press release that he'd already left us.
i'm certain that at least a few people were turned on to jesse as a result of me putting "no no man" & "morning in the sub basement of hell" into heavy rotation.
thanks for being here.
