Big Melly

Jul 1, 2008 2:32 AM

Thanks for your help introducing teen readers to the first ever MG/YA novel published in real time in a blog format!

Melly Mills is very tall. Freakishly impossibly tall. Basketball hoops come up to her hips, and most people are only a bit taller than her knees. She looks down on giraffes, and has to bend down to peek into a second-story window. She's just a bit shy of 18 feet, and as far as she can tell from the Book of World Records, nobody else has ever been anywhere near as tall as that.

Her mother died when Melly was twelve. Her father passed away last fall, and fifteen-year-old Melly suddenly found herself alone in a world that knew nothing of her existence--until the day she strolled into town and caused a bit of a scene. The name of her blog is taken from that day's newspaper headline: "Giant girl rampages through town".

Melly has been taken in by the Appletons, who own an orchard adjacent to Mills Farm, which makes it convenient for her to continue caring for her beloved cows. She is being tutored by her physician, Dr. Crisp, and expects to attend public school for the first time, starting in the fall.

New episodes of "Giant Girl Rampages" are posted most weekdays, sometimes twice. It's hard to fit in when you're living large!

A wonderful review from the Romance Readers Connection...
Lady Millicent has always felt that she has lived in her mother's shadow, the proper and mannerly Duchess of Weatherly, author of the renowned best selling tome on manners; something Millicent has never been too good at. Taking the advice of her mother's friend, Millicent decides to go to Scotland to apply for the job of a nanny. However, upon arriving, she realizes there are actually two others ladies there for the job also, women who seem to need the job much more than her. Millicent is determined to keep her identity secret however she also wants to help the children and the other ladies.
Lord McDougal has no idea what was awaiting him on his arrival home. He desperately needs help with his two children, yet, picking from the three ladies in his home may be difficult, that is until he realize Millicent is the damsel he rescued on the road. McDougal knows he has been in need of a wife although he had not met the woman he thought he could live the rest of his life with and one to help his children. It doesn't take long for him to realize that the woman he wants is right under his roof.
THOROUGHLY MANNERLY MILLICENT is a remarkable story filled with laughter and romance. Ms. Thoman gives readers an unforgettable tale that they will find hard to put down until the end.

Remember as Memorial Day comes - the voices....

Of wives...who would rather have their husbands to hold

Of children...who would rather have their dad or mom at home.

Of mothers...who have buried their sons/daughters

Of fathers...whose feet their children followed

Of the men and women fighting a nightmare of their own -

one they will carry with them until the same song plays,

the same flag drapes and the same tears fall

just as they watched in pain their friends and comrades

committing what they will come to call "wrongs"

by which they lived..by which they survived...

nightmares they will carry with them throughout their lives.

It doesn't go away when the guns are laid down..

It doesn't go away when they return home...

It doesn't go away for them - why should it for you?
