Love the Shostakovich piece!!! Sounds great!!!

I was about to sent Jonathan a little personal message in appreciation of is Shostakovich recording and the clarity of is interpretation choices, but instead Ill make that public.

Being intimate with this kind of music I though a little walkthrough my help those who arent familiar with Opus 87 to enjoy and sink deeper in that first Prelude and Fugue.

The diptych is working as a contrast. The prelude is a harmonic labyrinth with, at time, five notes chord on some sarabande rhythm. On the contrary the prelude (in C) as NO harmonic accident whatsoever (no sharps or flats anywhere!). You got to love Shostakovich for the very point of a fugue is to move around from a tonality to another. Instead he manages to sustain it with tonal modes. Wow.

The contrast exists at the harmonic level then. Jonathan avoid the temptation swinging the sarabande doted rhythm to enforce a rhythmic difference with the fugue, he instead unify the two different world with a rhythmic calm and in doing so; preserve the real contrast (this harmonic stuff above) to be savored at first sight.

You may also notice the three anacroses (little notes before an actual note) in the middle voice near the end of the fugue (Bar 80, 82 a C and 85, a F) departing from the rhythmic stability and announcing the coda (the end). Nicely done Jonathan.

Well, only 23 to go now

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the add request. I enjoyed listening to your piano playing. The Roland keyboard recorded on your computer sounded good. If you get a chance, check out my free download from my new CD, "unwind." It's a solo piano track called "Peaceful" and it's a song for inner peace and outer peace, which means: NO MORE WAR! (I see that you are in the Air Force and I support you and everyone working in the military. But I do not support the war in Iraq) I think you will find the music melodic, optimistic, and, well, peaceful. If you like it, drop a comment my way.

Thank you for your comment and top 8. I really like the sensitivity in your playing. It would sound great on a Steinway.

"I am under the heartfelt conviction that the sole purpose of music is to glorify God." Amen. Perfectly placed.

Glorious interpretations and I also adore all things Bach. I will drop a line I have been using lately: "All hail Bach and those who perform his musical wonders for they shall enter the kingdom of heaven."
