Yo Paul.  Broke and can't afford new books, so I'm reading yours again for the 3rd time while on the shitter.  Information you need to know.

If you're still writing music for ESPN.com definitely check out The Flaming Lips new album.  Amazing as always.

i like the beatles. they were always being played in my house. that said, i get it. it's the same argument i have with other comics who insist on the greatness of lenny bruce. you could do a find/replace in your article with beatles/lenny bruce and in the place of u2 put tommy tiernan and in the place of stones put pryor... blah, blah, blah. you get the idea.

i will say this though: as we get older our tastes invariably change. it is not disingenuous to say "i love the beatles" if i have lived long enough to discover them on my own terms. it's no different than some of my friends who love opera. i knew these people when they were puking their guts out at keggers 15 years ago. but they've evolved and so has their tastes.

I have been reading you on the life for 6 months or so and because of your insistence on The Nationals greatness(and Pandora), I am now a fan of The National. Thank you for keeping music relevant in my life when it seems likes some musicians don't care!

p.s. New Brand New Album coming out!!!!!!!

I have a question to ask you. I grew up in Kansas City and got my musical roots there. Thanks to KC, I listen to mostly alternative. Whenver I go back to KC, I usually listen to 96.5 The Buzz. Last week, I went up there for an church service. I was just crossing the West Bottoms on 670 making my way back home (I live in the vast wasteland portion of Kansas, as you so truthfully put it) when Youth Group's version of "Forever Young" started playing. I couldn't help but think, "This is just one of those movie-perfect music/life corelations." It really helped that the sun was setting when this was happening. My question to you is, when was the last time you had one of those moments?

Aug 26, 2009 4:54 PM

i've been reading you for a few months now and i have discovered that there is an odd inverse correlation between my ambivalence of your musical recommendations and my absolute love of your writing. i think that's a compliment.

pert is a good choice. finesse is too metro and suave is just crap while sounding downright cheesy. pert is succinct. maybe a little perky but still...

keep writing and i'll keep reading.

Another well-written piece on the Worldwide Leader. Question for you: I bumped into a picture of a rather tall man wearing some overwhelming all white outfit (with matching hat and scarf) on another networking site using your name, claiming to be from Spain. Can you put the rumors about the demise of your wardrobe to rest?

Once again great column...its funny how I look to ESPN to give me a great music column lol...Very sorry to hear about the your personal issue and hope only the best for you from hear on out...Its also awesome how you are showing the National some love in you column's, they make amazing, touching music!!!

Enjoyed the latest ESPN post. Brave of you to get that personal. My condolences. I also love that Pearl Jam song. Their rockers are good, but nothing beats their melancholy ballads. "I Got Id" is another by them that's good for feeling depressed. I disagree with the poster below me and say go for depressing music and let yourself wallow in it for a while. I always listen to the first two Counting Crows albums. Soul-crushing.

Once again great blog. I hurt for you bro, I think everyone that reads this can understand the correlation between music and heartache. If it wasn't for the heartbreak there wouldn't be great songs out there. With that said I feel you need to put on something upbeat (Sublime always helped me with that back in the day) and rock out. Good or bad it always sucks to break up, but life is a one lap race and you pick your self up and march on.

In response to your article about jazz: I used to not get jazz, but I wanted to. Then I took a Jazz History class in college, and through that, I got it. Now I enjoy it and understand it. And for what it's worth, it's with the same ear that I enjoy jazz that I enjoy the Mars Volta. Keep up the good writing!

May 6, 2009 2:18 AM

Well, I'm hanging out, and no luck so far. People are just walking by, and I think I was drinking too long elsewhere. I may just have to wait for their next show around here which could be in a few months. It's probably better since I'm flat broke right now. That and I was drinking elsewhere for a bit too long.

The Kills are playing in Boston tonight, but it's sold out. Should I hang outside the club looking for someone to pawn off tickets after I'm done with my preliminary Cinco de Mayo drinking? Advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Paul, I was listening to 96.5 yesterday when I heard a familiar name. Low and behold it was you. You were funny as hell man, and ol' Lazlo and Slimfast were still talking about you 3 hours later. It was fun listening to it. Take care man!

Hey Paul,
I've been thinking about your Nickelback vs. AC DC comments.
I dunno what's up with all of the vitriol aimed at poor old Nickelback. I enjoy their music every time I'm waiting for my transmission to get fixed
–as much as you can enjoy any music while getting your transmission fixed.

I like your Nickelback/AC DC comparison, but the major problem is that Nickelback are utterly humourless.
AC DC might make LCD rock songs like Nickelback do, but AC DC have a sense of humour about what they do.
It's the seriousness of Nickelback that makes them unlikable to me.
The music doesn't really help, though.
