Oh, I neglected to mention Clifton Chenier and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown; the latter appeared frequently, and was a big fave with the Tipitina's crowd during those days. Oh, just remembered a group called The Nighthawks, from St. Louis, I believe. The place was packed with Tulane undergrads (and me) whenever they had a gig there.

Glad to be added. I was an habitue of the "old" Tipitina's, back when it was what Euros call a "dance bar." I don't recall ever paying more than $3.00 at the door or ever leaving before 3 a.m. I had a wealth of memorable experiences there, including seeing Professor Longhair's final performance, four days before his death, also seeing the briefly reunited Sam and Dave, Huey "Piano" Smith's initial comeback performance in 11/78 (I think), the Nevilles every time they appeared, The Radiators countless times, Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, The Blues Brothers Band (minus Jake, Elwood, and Blue Lou), Etta James, Irma Thomas, Lil' Queenie and the Percolators (I wonder what ever happened to them), the whole contingent from Austin, too many others to name. I also recall vividly a shooting incident that occurred one evening which caused pandemonium; the recipient of the round was named, I kid you not, Jesse James. Of course, Tip's has changed much during the ensuing years, but I'm glad to know it's still running, albeit in a somewhat different mode from what I experienced. The corner of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas was sort of a home away from home for me during those halcyon grad school days at Tulane.
