We are pleased to announce that our three year campaign to rename Broad Street to honor Georgie Woods has been successful! The City of Philadelphia has placed signs from Broad and Diamond Street to Broad and Dauphin Street, Georgie Woods Blvd! On October 20, 2007 from 1pm to 4pm join us in front of the Uptown Theater to have an official dedication of the mural and street renaming. The Uptown"Reunion" will also feature performances and special appearances of groups and singers who appeared at the Uptown. In addition, the Uptown-Greatest Performing Arts Youth will perform.

Uptown Theater Sponsors Anti—Violence Program


The Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation will sponsor a six-week program designed to reduce violence on the streets this summer. The program, Uptown-Greatest Philadelphia Performing Arts Program begins on July 25, 2007 and ends on August 31, 2007 at 2231 N. Broad Street from 9am to 3pm.The program will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with field trips scheduled during the week. The program is designed for youth from 13 to 17 years old with an emphasis on supporting youth in the North Central Empowerment Zone.

Uptown-Greatest Philadelphia Performing Arts program will consist of three areas: Self-Esteem, Film Training and Music Appreciation. The program, coordinated by Bonnie Harmon will cover issues that will explore problem solving, understanding film making and a course on the history of Rhythm and Blues led by Uptown Theater Music Director, Alfie Pollitt.

The President of the Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation, Linda Waters Richardson stated” We believe that our city needs to assist our youth in employment in the entertainment industry , particularly film production in order to reduce violence in our city”. The Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation has operated a youth program since 2004 that produced a video to be aired in the fall of 2007 that included youth in research, camera work, set work and interviewing techniques.

The final program for the summer program will be a production in front of the historic Uptown Theater this fall. For more information, contact Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation at 215-236-1878.
