David Franks: Walkabout…

Oct 27, 2009 10:16 AM

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Ayup Hedgepig.

Many thanks for the friendship,it's really appreciated.

I love your live recordings,they give me a mental image of me going berserk at a dodgy ceilidh.Awesome.

All the best to all you guys and with the good grace of the Gods of fortune I'll hopefully catch up with you at the Belper festival. It's on my calendar,but my calendar seems to have a wayward nature of it's own at the minute.

The fact that you guys enjoy doing what you're doing really shines through.

Made up to be mates.

Cheer to you all,

Tim !-)

76 of 230, walkaboutsverse. 741. com: LAND RIGHTS

If there is a good thing
From the Second World War
It’s that most peoples learnt
To conquer lands no more.

In Africa, Asia,
And the Pacific, too:
Post-war independence -
Steps only bigots rue.

But for some indigenes,
Outnumbered much-too-much,
It has all come too late
For liberty, as such.

So ‘tis in Australia,
And America’s sites,
Where the best now, I think,
Is to respect land rights.

Hello again,
Without trying to sound too forward, I'd like to reccommend to you Cruachan's 'Folk-Lore' album. They are well known in the metal community, which though odd, as it is a 'folk/rock' album, is well justified as it is frankly marevllous! Prehaps as part of a music artists' education, I would reccomend you purchase and listen to this album. I feel you would very much enjoy, and prehaps even benefit from this release, as it's sound is expansive and similar to the work you are doing, and prehaps could provide direction for you.
Sorry to post it this on your Myspace page, but I really feel it's an important release and I felt very enthusiastic when Rosie posted on my page.
Many thanks, and keep the good work up!

- William

Hi Rosie (and the fellas too)! Thanks for your comment, it was lovely to meet you at Ely. Sorry I couldn't stay for all of your set on Sunday as planned but we had to start travelling back up to Sheffield.

Ah yes I was chatting to a little girl who said her Dad was in the band, she was lovely! Told me how wonderful you were at teaching her the whistle! :-)

Best wishes,
