Here is a fun night out that won't happen again for a while.

Tomorrow night at the North Star Bar, 27th and Poplar streets, Philadelphia, FDR Label will host a concert comprised of several bands performing sets limited to songs with girls' names in their titles.

The concert showcases the label's new compilation album “About a Girl,” which features 21 groups including Dipsomaniacs, Rigbees, Frantic, Milton and the Devil's Party, Maybe Pete, Commons, Swivel Chairs and Beretta 76, all performing songs such as Elvis Costello's “Alison,” Arthur Alexander's “Anna,” the Beach Boys' “Wendy,” the Turtles' “Elenore” and the Kinks' “Victoria.”

In a phone call last week, Dipsomaniacs leader Mick Chorba explained the project. “I had already done other compilations, a Who tribute, a Replace-ments tribute and an 1980s teen movies compilation called "High School Reunion.'” The concept for "About a Girl' was really old. I got it from when I was making mix tapes growing up.”

Chorba said “When I came up with the idea for a girls name CD compilation, people started sending me suggestions. There was such a large pool of songs, I asked them to tell me what to use. I told them no song was too obscure. It was exciting to get the e-mails and listen to what people did with the songs. The (Looking Glass) "Brandy' cover cracks me up and the Velvet Underground song (“Stephanie Says”) turned out great. I was surprised that more than one band wanted to do (Bruce Springsteen's) "Rosalita.' I didn't think anyone could handle it, but the Rigbees nailed it.”

For tomorrow's show, each band will play a 25-minute set of girl name songs. Appearing are Grammar Debate (“Stephanie Says”), Late Night Television (“Brandy“), Taggart (Weeze

Philadelphia Weekly article about the release show!

Opening Riff

by Doug Wallen

Simply the Breast
You might not expect a company called Face Down Records to be big on charity. To be fair, the Trenton, N.J., label now goes simply by FDR, and will donate part of the proceeds from its new About a Girl compilation to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. This is the label that got Guided by Voices to cover “Baba O’Riley” for its 2004 Who tribute, which fittingly benefited a hearing loss prevention charity.

About a Girl is a tribute too, but the bands don’t all cover songs by the same act. They cover their favorite tunes featuring a girl’s name in the title or chorus. Hence the breast cancer connection and the comp’s title.

It’s also a local affair, with all the bands hailing from the Philly area or Jersey, save D.C.’s Timothy Bracken Complex. That means you won’t find Frank Black or Matthew Sweet, who appeared on FDR’s ’80s-inspired High School Reunion.

You will, however, find the Trolleyvox breathing new life into the Beatles’ “Julia,” Creeping Weeds covering a song the Beatles covered (Arthur Alexander’s “Anna (Go to Him)”), and Taggart chugging through Weezer’s “Suzanne.” Some bands get a chance to play against type, as the loud power-poppers Grammar Debate! gently twinkle on the Velvets’ classic “Stephanie Says,” and the Swivel Chairs downplay their crunchy indie rock to flesh out Simon and Garfunkel’s “April Come She Will.”

And FDR owner Mick Chorba’s band Dipsomaniacs pick the under-the-radar Material Issue tune “Something’s Happened to Catherine.”

People don’t track down tributes to hear exact replicas. They’re after a new take on something familiar. In this case, they get a good cause to boot.

About a Girl CD release show: Fri., Nov. 9, 9pm. $8. With Grammar Debate!, Taggart, Rigbees, Late Night Television, Successful Failures, Dipsomaniacs + Timothy Bracken Complex. North Star, 27th and Poplar sts. 215.787.0488. www.northstarrocks

Grammar Debate!

Sep 19, 2007 11:05 PM

NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT SEPT 27th! @ KHYBER!

GRAMMAR DEBATE!
“An endearing mish-mash of some of the best bits of indie pop over the eighties and nineties, GRAMMAR DEBATE! are proud to wear their hearts and influences on their sleeves...This debut is a hearty collection of hooks and riffs, of harmonies and tinkling, of guitars soaring then stopping, sometimes starting again. This is catchiness personified with a band just, plainly, having fun and to hell with what anybody thinks.”

THE SWIMMERS (Mad Dragon Records)
"...It is delightful, shimmery fare with rich layers of thumping percussion and chimey harmonies...threads of Wilco and Lemonheads and The Shins, all wrapped up in a fresh and original package."

XYZ AFFAIR (From Brooklyn NY)
"The path to happiness is as easy as X-Y-Z. Sometimes you need some good old fashioned power pop in your life to remind you that the sky can be sunny every now and then. Who needs angst when you've got The XYZ Affair?”

THE MODERN SKIRTS (From Athens GA)
"...A pop band with a relentless focus on melody and song structure. Above all else, the songs compiled in their two years of existence beg to be hummed. The boys own strong convictions towards lyrical weight, lush instrumentation, and righteous harmonies.”

Mick-

Brandi's been serving us whiskey and wine everytime we play so we've been too drunk to do anything. We busted Brandi out at a recent show and well... she was very popular with the boys. Especially the sailors. She's a fine girl but our hearts belong to the sailors... I mean sailing, uh boats, er the sea yeah the sea. Our "lady" is the sea... So anyway, when would you like us to pass off Brandi into your capable arms?

The Frantic will be covering the song "Gabrielle" by the Nips for this comp. I'm gonna have to get nice and drunk when I record the vocal track as a tribute to the great Shane MacGowan... and because I have a bit of a drinking problem. By the way, Mick, I swear we were talking about doing it live at the NorthStar show. You must have read our minds.
