Gainesville Sun - Soft Targets at tnt's
Saturday night Tim & Terry's will host a Tallahassee band called
Soft Targets that I'm glad is coming back to Gator country. The first
time I saw these guys they opened up for Morningbell, and they
immediately caught my attention with their unusual but impressive look
on stage.
The bassist was playing keyboards and bass
simultaneously while sharing a three-part harmony with the drummer. Was
it theatrics? Possibly.
But the more I watched the more I noticed
it was maximization at its finest. This jazzy pop band got the most out
of every member, instrument and song. The grooves were light and bouncy
and the guitar tones were fresh, like they had been washed in reverb
and hung to dry in the room. Over all of this was Jessy Corry's
high-pitched half falsetto, which cut the fat bass lines apart. The
group's marriage of jazz, pop and even psychedelia is an ambitious
gentle sound that Gainesville needs because it leaves no fingerprints
of pride and pretension. It's just too bad they live in Tallahassee.
Fans of Karate, Television, The Cure, Cake or The Shins will love this
band.

I had a dream the other night where I was playing guitar with Soft Targets. We were playing a gig and I kept fucking up my parts. For some reason Nate was also playing guitar and at one point the band kinda halted to vamp. Meanwhile Nate was glaring at me playing my part trying to show me what to do. It was one of those anxiety ridden dreams where you're ill prepared and you feel a lot of stress and anxiety.
In the same dream, before we played the show, we were arranging a song by writing out sections of a song on separate index cards. We would rearrange them in different orders to see what worked best.
And before that I remember someone saying, "and there's your friend, Steve!".
