Admittedly, I read about "Walk the Night" in an article by Gayle Rubin before actually hearing it. Now that I know it, and love it, I've sort of stripped it of its leather bar value and turned it into an anthem for Chester Cheetah and Dr. Teeth.

A pleasure to "meet" you, Mr. Kogan. I'm halfway thru Real Punks Don't... and I'm equal parts confused, ecstatic, engrossed, but best of all--contaminated. As they say, thanks for the add.

No problem, I listened to Flynnville because of Xhuxk too! though I did think their CD looked intriguing when it first arrived at work. If I saw anything on Show Dog at the library, I'd probably check it out.

Frank if you schedule a Michael Freedberg day you'll need to have your sound system turned to "bass up" and be wearing jeans, sneakers & baseball cap visor forward -- ACE GEAR for dancing on house music!

True, The Velvet Underground had a corny way of dressing, but that's what I liked about them, or well, one of many. It's funny how you mention "Sister Ray" because I was at once going to start a band by that name. That song and "Sunday Mourning" were definantly two of my favorites. One thing I found the most interesting in your book so far is the description of punk, "It's Junior High but more intense." That little peice smacked me in the face because, I understand it to it's full potential, and I feel as if punk is the emotions, anger, and rebellion against Junior High. I remember that if you were a person of individuality you were imediately condemned to an inevitable attack from people who could not accept anything that did not fit the image of cool. Junior High for someone like me who, they did claim a freak, was an eye opening to human cruelty, but I will admit that went on with me since kindergarden. Punk however, made me proud to be different from them, and made me want to be as individualistic as individualism can go. Fuck the cool crowd, I've been in it, could still be in it, but right now I'm just the kid with blue hair who is still a part of that freak crowd and will not let the cool crowd corrupt me. I got blue hair to spit in their face just like the spider guy attacked the jock at The Contortions concert you brought up. Some of the cool crowd are o.k., I wont generalize, but they are also the crowd that tried to force me and a little girl with glasses to fight in the first grade, and why? Because, we were freaks to them, or emotions did not matter. It's just like how the blacks were once treated as objects instead of people during the south. Freaks compared to the normal are not normal therefor making them unhuman; an object. I personally hate this, and I guess my goal in life is to rebel against it with philosophy and or music, maybe both. But I love your book and I'm probably about to go read more.

So yah, I finally got your book. It was in the rat race of a closing down C.D. store. I saw it sitting on a shelf accompanying a couple of other punk orienated objects. There were two coppies and when I saw them I immediately had the desire to turn two into one. I Got it 40% off too. And then got a Generation X C.D., Delta 5, The Strays, and The Gun Club. Over all I'm happy with the buy. And right now I am at around page 50 in your book and can cope with a lot of your experiences and view points. So hopefully I will soon finish, especially at the speed I'm going.-Amazing so far.

I noticed the title of your book up there, "real punks don't wear black". I personally can't find myself enjoying the color black but I know Lou Reed has warn the color and he is what I specify as a "real punk". His look had a cool sexyness to it unlike the goth seen today though. I think by black you are refering to the goth scene of course. I'd like to read the book myself though and find out what it's about. I myself hate to label myself but I am a fan of the punk music, who is displeased with how for the most part the "emo/hardcore" community establish themselves to be punk. I've even heard such bands as The Ramones in their inspirations which I find totally contradicting and repulsive. I'd rather the music really be dead as it's said to be rather than have these self-hating people claim it as their own.
