You're invited to the SSWP hot cider - open house at the IAC Sculpture Studio at LTV, Hazelwood.
Dear Friends,
As you may know the Southside Works Sculpture Project is a large scale public sculpture dedicated to the rich industrial steel heritage of the Pittsburgh region which is currently being fabricated in the former LTV Coke Plant in Hazelwood. With the project entering its final stages, we wanted to take the opportunity to have an Open House at the LTV site and invite you to come down and see the work in progress. For a preview of what's in store for you click here. As you can imagine, viewing this large-scale sculpture in the context of the former LTV mill is a exciting experience which allows visitors to fully appreciate not only the grand size of the sculpture, but also the history it seeks to commemorate.
So come and visit us on November 2nd, from Noon till 4pm. We'll be discussing the project, showing people around the mill building, and staying warm with steaming beverages. we look forward to seeing you at the site!

Call For Artists:
Installation Olympic Theater
On March 17, Pittsburgh's newest form of performance art theater will arrive, Installation Olympic Theater. This new art competition is part of the Tom Museum Performance Festival happening from 7pm to 10pm on Saturday, March 17th in the lobby of The Mattress Factory, one of the World's leading centers of site-specific installation.
Installation Olympic Theater is a contest in which three teams (of 3 artists each) compete to make a winning art installation in one hundred and fifty minutes. Teams will be made up of regional artists competing for the title of "Masters of Installation Olympic Theater."
Each team participating will have two weeks notice to select the materials to bring. (Which must fit in a single suitcase) All three teams will also be provided with similar supplies that will be unveiled at the contest, as well as a standard selection of tools. Before beginning the contest, each team must read an artist statement and make introductory comments.
The event will be hosted by local artists Tom Sarver and Mike Cuccaro, and will be judged by local arts professionals and people from other fields. Judging criteria will include: 1. Creative use of materials provided. 2. Style of performance / process of building. 3. Ability to follow artist statement in construction of work.
Seating will be provided for audience members. Tickets for the event will be available at the door. During the construction of the installations, music and other performances will take place. Free refreshments will also be available.
For more information, please contact Tom Sarver.

CHICAGO UDU CALLS is a collaboration between acclaimed Italian musicians Daniele Cavallanti & Tiziano Tononi and the up-and-coming Chicago trio Ways & Means ......................................................................................................... Tenor saxophonist Cavallanti and percussionist Tononi are longstanding members of the Italian Instabile Orchestra, a super-group of Italy’s finest improvisers. They also lead several projects of their own and play together as the duo Udu Calls. They have performed and recorded with several major innovators of creative jazz music including: Cecil Taylor, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, William Parker, Muhal Richard Abrams, Walter Wierbos, Willem Breuker, Oliver Lake, Leroy Jenkins and many others. The three members of Ways & Means are Dan Godston on trumpet, Jayve Montgomery on reeds and percussion, and Joel Wanek on upright bass. Although they are an ocean apart, these five musicians share a common affinity for American jazz, traditional African and Asian music, and European free improvisation.
