David Franks: Walkabout…
Dec 12, 2009 7:48 PM
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.
In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare;
Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls;
The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees,
Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham;
Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

The Design Compass
Jun 10, 2009 12:41 AM
Hey Pat!
Thanks so much for adding The Design Compass!
The Design Compass was created to give people the opportunity to get great design and affordable, high quality printing, all at one location. We hope you take a look at our new myspace and see samples of our work.
Design is change. There is something to be said for the way in which design can communicate something beyond simply using works. Communicating something with the graphic arts is a vital and essential aspect of furthering the vision and success of a company, event, or image. If there is any way that we can help you make a change, please don't hesitate to write.
Thanks so much,
-The Design Compass

Hello to all my friends out in the world. Maybe you remember … we got some of the same roots. Today’s a very special day for me. My album “Dreams and Shadows” is out now and available at
cdbaby. com
. 14 Songs … each of them is telling its own story. With influences of great songwriters like Kristofferson, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot or Jim Croce … but most of all it’s my own thing. I’ve just posted the title song and another new song. Maybe you got some minutes to listen, maybe give me a feedback … and if you enjoy it feel free to buy it.
Have a great day and keep on dreaming… your friend Shiregreen

Hi Pat, thanks a lot for the friendship. Great to be added to such a great singer and songwriter ... and such a unique pipe player. There are wonderful tunes on your page, my personal favourite is "Fall" - full of true emotion. In some ways we got the same roots. Maybe you got the time to listen to some of my songs. For example “Freedom fighter” which won the worldwide songwriter contest “Comprosers" (Los Angeles /Maastricht 2008). Think you like it. Hope to meet you some day in Germany or in California (when will I ever get there??)... who knows. All the best for you and all your friends ... Shiregreen from Germany

So glad you enjoyed the essay!
I lived in SoCal for about 5 years after arriving in the States but have moved several times since. I'm currently based in Atlanta but my wife and I are plotting a move to Dublin sometime in the coming year.
I did a recording for the Paste website of me reading a portion of my essay and playing a couple slow airs (Vignoles half set, Gallagher D chanter). My section begins about 2/3 of the way through the clip:
