Celebrate Black History Month - Free Screening of "Lumumba"

Liberation Film Series - Free Movie Screening
Lumumba (2000), Raoul Peck, dir.

Celebrate Black History month with a free screening of Raoul Peck's poignant film Lumumba (2000). The movie documents the life and death of the brilliant African politician Patrice Lumumba. Lumumba was the shining star of a generation of post-independence African left-wing leaders interested in charting a course away from Western dependency and imperialism. Peck's Lumumba is a tragic figure whose demise raises questions about the possibilities for the liberation of Africa in the 21st century.

Of course I told lies to get us into Iraq. Any school child knows that. Don’t know why Scott McClellan didn’t. If we didn’t bend a lot of truth, we never would have done what we done over there. This whole McClellan double-cross signifys just why I’m backing John McCain so hard. He sat right here in the White House and told me there would be no investigating into how we thought up Iraq. There will be no need to look backwords with John. He will protect my Presidential legacy.

We don’t create homeless veterans; they do it to themselves. My Veterans Administration supports veterans who support themselves, not them that whine about what they been put through and not getting enough education benefits. Look at John McCain and myself, we are both Vietnam era and we didn’t need no education benefits. We both picked ourselves up by the boots. We are both shinning beacons of what these homeless vets can be, beacons standing on a high hill of compassionate conservatism.

Where have all the students gone?

Why are college students not protesting the war in Iraq as they did during Vietnam? My friend began asking that question when making this video of a candlelight vigil held on the eve of the war’s fifth anniversary.

NYC Thurs 3-27 Indigenous Music/Arts/Film Benefit Owe Aku
NYC Thurs 3-27 Indigenous Music, Art, Film Benefit at IAC 55 West 17th Street 5th Floor (5C) between 5th & 6th Avenues (Manhattan/NYC) for Owe Aku

Owe Aku ( “bring back the way”) works to preserve and revitalize the Lakota (Sioux) way of life. Our ancient identity guides us in our work and contributes to the preservation of the Earth. We promote and protect our land, treaty and human rights. Recently, tragedy struck when the home and office of our leaders, Debra and Alex White Plume, burned to the ground in the middle of the South Dakota winter. The family and the organization moves forward and we are once again turning to our friends and allies for help.

Thursday's multimedia program will consist of: presentations on Owe Aku’s work with Hemp (clips from the film Standing Silent Nation), Owe Aku’s efforts to preserve sacred sites (clips from a film on Bear Butte), an update on Owe Aku’s historic anti-uranium mining case, the progress towards rebuilding, sale of beautiful photographs from Owe Aku’s homeland and daily life by Malcolm MacKinnon, and Music by Matou: Indigenous musicians performing original compositions celebrating indigenous cultural strength, perpetuation of tradition, and expression of a love for nature.
The music is an eclectic fusion of Native American and powerful traditional Maori chants

Indigenous Peoples Message to the U.S. antiwar movement

We call on the U.S. antiwar movement to acknowledge that the very establishment of the United States and it's expansion was built on the genocide against the First Nations/Indigenous Peoples of the continent, along with the enslavement of African peoples & exploitation of peoples from around the globe.

Iraq (and the over 130 countries that have a presence of U.S. military) is just a continuation of "Manifest Destiny" which cleared the continent for settler colonization. Thus it's not a "mistake" of U.S. policy, but is at the core of the very foundation of the U.S. from it's beginnings continuing thru to today.

Thus, we say that the antiwar mobilizations that are taking place in March/April 2008

1)have an indigenous person opening the events ackowledging the above history and it's continuation into the present day and how U.S. history is linked to today's war(s).

2)that there be an organized and visible collective presence of contingents focused on indigenous peoples concerns at the mobilizations along with that presence being also on the websites, press releases, media spokespeople, et. al of these groups/mobilizations.

3)that the indigenous names of cities/towns in the various indigenous languages be acknowledged by also being mentioned to remind people of the indigenous origins of this land (for example "Manatay" for what is now called Manhattan ) along with the peoples (for example: Lenape (& others)) and the original languages.

We got to help old John McCain. Help him stop saying things like we are going to stay in Iraq one hundred years, one thousand years, ten thousand years, until the earth colapses. Those kind of words just confuse the American people. We need a catchy saying. Something like, I see the light at the end of the tunnel! That worked in Vietanm, kept us in there twenty years. Get me ol John on the phone. I need to give him some words to stump by, so he can follow me to the White House. He is a stay the courser who will protect my legacy and a fighter pilot just like me.

The President wants us to put on a full court press for John McCain. He feels only another fighter pilot like himself has the vision and tenacity to stay the course in Iraq. That only McCain will make the sacrifices required to preserve the Bush legacy, no matter how many more must die. It is time to spin up this administration’s propaganda propellers one more time gentlemen. May the God of spin be with us.

Thanks for the add! It means much!

Franz Kafka, in his Letter to Oskar Pollak, said, "I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us...We need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us."

Crows on the Cross is such a book.

It's like Stephen King's Christine on crack. I liked the way the story jumped from Rainey to Drew and back. Also, the titles of the chapters made you feel like you were counting down to something big. I give it two thumbs up, fine holiday fun!...Sheena, Reader from VA

The most frightening thing in the human race is that we 'produce' the worse monsters, demons, evil, vile creatures outside of our imaginations. That's what makes Crows on the Cross such a compelling read. Imagine how sick and twisted a human has to be to become a demon?

This is a book that shows that both men and women are susceptible to the real-life monsters that live and breathe all around us. In a red '69 Caddy, you'll ride right along side them and delve right into their pasts, becoming white knuckled by the end wanting to destroy their demons for them.

-Lauren Ferrell, Publisher

The demons she creates in this book are too real, so real it will change the way you look at the common passerby every time you walk out your front door.

Kristy Tallman has done it again! Her ability to turn the pages of a novel into a real to life psychological hell for the reader by showing you that the genuine horror in this world is our very own human race has again been accomplished with an encore for more. Tallman has definitely surpassed th

FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO 8

John Brown

Trumpet of Freedoom
Norman Thomas Marshall

Early in the morning of his last day on Earth, the day that he will hang by the neck until dead, John Brown writes a farewell letter to his compatriots in the abolitionist movement. In the letter, he registers his outrage and horror at his first seeing an African Slave, starved and naked and chained to a post and beaten bloody with an iron shovel for the offense of stealing a crumb of decent food. In the passion of that moment, he vows to God to rectify the injustice, and wage war against the government that sanctions this abomination.
“When performing, Norman Marshall is John Brown. He embodies all of the Puritan warrior’s characteristics: his passion, his toughness, his piety, and, above all, his uncompromising commitment to human rights.”

-- David S. Reynolds

In this one-person drama, co-written by Norman Thomas Marshall and Director George Wolf Reily, Mr. Marshall portrays the legendary Brown and 30 other Civil War period characters.

Norman Thomas Marshall is a thirty-two-year veteran as a professional actor. He has participated in more than three hundred productions- stage, film, television and radio- as actor, producer or director. Marshall has shared the stage and screen with such notable performers as F. Murray Abraham, Raul Julia, Moses Gunn, Bette Midler, Peter Reigert, Burt Reynolds, Telly Savalas, Barbara Streisand and Fritz Weaver.
