Dear Word Nerd,

I want to say 'whither the photo with the hat?' for the alliterative qualities, but I realise I actually know the answer (in fact, the photo has not gone very far) -- but that hat! It had panache! And I miss it.

I think that The Word Nerd's Apprentice is exactly the kind of reality TV that CBC *should* be making, if it really insists on making reality TV shows.

I'm rhapsodical over the idea already.

The last time I heard "dross" in a song it was Everything But the Girl's "When All's Well, " which, like your "The Alphabet Song, " is also very enjoyable. More to the point, if you've never heard any John Linnell, you might quite like it, especially the one about James Polk.
Anyway, nice songs, WN. Have a nice night.

Am I playing Teatro? Of course!! Unless...oh, are you going to be there? Uh... I think I might have other plans actually...my racoon has hepatitis and...I have that thing, you know...my niece is getting divorced and...the ottoman I'm building is at a critical stage and...that havarti I bought is rotting...Oh, what the hell-you're not the WORST person to play a gig with.
Looking forward to it.
Uh, you're not gonna bring your keyboard, are you?

I found a small glossary of canadian vrs american words online that may help with your quest for the perfect canadian word:
http://hcs.harvard.edu/hgscc/glossary.html
(Helpful? Dunno. a. it's from Harvard and b. it looks like it heavily sources Canadian Oxford Dictionary, so you probably know all of them already, since you did write the definitions!)

Anyways, here are a few:

>>idiot string - a thingy string that holds your mittens together

>>shit disturber - a reasonable definition would be an instigator, particularly one who for no good reason turns stones better left unturned. According to "The World This Weekend" of Saturday June 13, 1998, from the CBC, in which was discussed the latest Canadian Oxford Dictionary, this is indeed a Canadianism. A search of the web provided confirmation (the show also claimed that dish soap was a Canadianism, although there is evidence of its general use in much of the Northern United States).

and of course:

>>tuque - far more specific than the American "knit hat", although you still have to specify if there's a pom-pom or not.

[As always, toque stirs up the controversy... about the spelling they write "If you disagree with our spelling of tuque, and think it should be touque, toque, or some variant, please find a dictionary that agrees with you and disagrees with us before you send me e-mail. Also, be prepared to explain why LaTuque, P.Q. is spelled the way it is. Thank you. --Eds." Personally, I think it should be spelled "toque". - Ellis.]
