HIP HOP APPRECIATION WEEK

Hip Hop Appreciation Week begins on May 14th 2007 and concludes on May 21st 2007. Hip Hop Appreciation Week began in 1998 as a time set aside every third week in May to acknowledge and appreciate the existence of Hip Hop itself. During this time (May 14th-21st 2007) the Hip Hop community refocuses itself through a collective review and update of its own history and core principles and elements. Principles- peace, love, unity and having fun. Elements- Breakin, Emceein, Graffiti Art, Deejayin, Beat Boxin, Street Fashion, Street Language, Street Knowledge and Street Entrepreneurialism. The idea is to celebrate Hip Hop itself.

During Hip Hop Appreciation Week artists can be asked to give sound advice on what they’ve learned about life and living Hip Hop this year. Schools of all sorts are encouraged to discuss Hip Hop academically and critically amongst its students and teachers. Radio DJs can upgrade their play of “conscious” Rap music over the airwaves and parents can discuss the true meaning and history of Hip Hop with their children. During Hip Hop Appreciation Week the Hip Hop community is encouraged to:

- Give the next person the right of way. Allow people to pass you. Do not block a person’s forward movement.

- Donate your skill or profession to someone who cannot afford it.

- At the supermarket give your change to the person behind you in line.

- Be quick to compliment and slow to criticize. Be ready to forgive and move on.

- Tithe 10% of your salary this week to your child’s teacher.

- Ease a neighbor’s pressure by donating your time toward the assistance of some duty they must undertake. Give of yourself this week.

Let us show our respect for Hip Hop with a sincere respect for one another. Men—support the women in your life. Women—comfort the men in your life. And let us all remain committed to the well-being of our children; they are the reason we do what we do. Love your children. Reserve a special love fo

You're bringing it hot with this book man. Finally someone is really dealing with this issue with honesty, self reflection and a fucking fantastic sense of humor. Thanks for stepping the conversation up to the next level. Ariel

Hello, just passing thru to say that voting has now closed in the Kidz on Fire Worlds Most Hip Hop Breakfast Cereal poll. Competition between cereals has been fierce throughout although the real stars really shone through by the second bowl...

The results are as follows;

In 3rd place came Lucky Charms for all of you that can remember that far back...

Second place went to Coco Pops giving the only serious competition to our eventual prize winner... Plenty of chocolaty goodness :-)

In first place, voted as the worlds most hip hop breakfast cereal, came Crunchy Nut Cornflakes! :-D This cereal works hard to entertain us with some phat flavours 24/7. Hats off to the dedicated support team at Kellogs, without them it would have never been possible.

Thanks to you also for your participation in the blog and the poll. :-)

Here is a photo of Kidz on Fire enjoying a McDonalds breakfast before the awards ceremony.

Have a great weekend!

Wanted to stop by and give you some appreciation for "Other People's Property"... I can't put the shit down! Its brilliantly written, and is reminding me to be critical of hip hop politics and of myself. When are you coming to the Bay for a book signing?

Freaq's Fable

Dec 27, 2006 4:16 PM

it is no wonder to me why hip hop bleeds from the ghetto to the back water hills to the plasticity of the suburbs... its real, it reaches to our core essences of rhythm, expression, color, community, emotion, and idividuality... we as humans, from the beginning have struggled to remain sane in a world of unrelenting instability, thus bringing forth the need to find peace of mind, in which for many seem to ask so many questions... from deep core and often tantelizing beats, to hypnotic flows, to the urge to paint our surrpoundings with our individual marks, representing who and where we are in evolution, to the chain reaction of addicts that come forth with an itch to be stripped of all masks and be tortured with the raw realism of what is, to bringin beauty, unity, strength, and hope from one head to the next, and lastly supporting a framework for us, supreme beings, to combat ego and battle for the sake of competition in skill, swapping respect for one another rather than killing in exhange for power and pride. To me, this is hip hop, this is our cure, our antedote to the madness....

Thank you for bringing forth your mind and heart and for pushin the reality of hip hop.... it spreads because its roots are imbedded in our humanistic tendency to be animalistic, stripped and in your face about what we are... from star wars to street wars, we have a passion, a need to plant seeds...

much love,
