Tonight, Thursday, Feb. 26th -- the film The Milky Way (1936) STARRING Harold Lloyd. Harold Lloyd, comic genius of both the sound and silent era, is milkman Burleigh Sullivan in Leo McCarey's whirlwind farce, The Milky Way. Lloyd ducks during a brawl, and the avoided punch knocks out a champion boxer, setting Sullivan in the spotlight as a new boxing wonder. A tricky manager takes control of the PR disaster, trains the milkman, fixes easy wins, and places Sullivan in an event that will prove once and for all who is the real champ. Too bad nice guy Sullivan doesn't realize he's being set up. The Milky Way is widely regarded as Harold Lloyd's finest talking picture. Director McCarey brought comedians Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy to the screen as a team and directed the Marx Brothers as well as W.C. Fields.

WILD’s 2nd Annual Film Noir Festival Concludes this week

Film noir for this week:

Thursday, June 19th at 7 p.m.
Quicksand (1950).
Mickey Rooney is Dan, who wants to take a girl on a date and he needs money. So, he swindles his employer, and things get worse: he continues to rob a bar patron, and then steals a car.

Friday, June 20th at 7 p.m.
The Scar (1948).
WILD concludes its summer film noir series with a story of a criminal out on the lam who tries to impersonate a person with a scar. He makes the mistake of having the scar placed on the wrong side of his face.

WHERE: South Texas College, Pecan Campus Auditorium - Building D
ADMISSION: $1.00

What is film noir? In the post-WWII Hollywood era that spawned most films noir, these movies were called Crime Thrillers. Film noir is all about style: kanted camera angles, dense shadows, a romantic, doom-laden atmosphere, always in shimmering, high-contrast black and white, rain-slick streets, guys in fedoras, and dames in slinky gowns. American writers, inspired by Hemingway's masculine pacing and vernacular speech, churned out crime stories reflecting a fear and anxiety of urban expansion and corruption. The writing was witty and humorous, especially potent when mixed with the darkest aspects of human nature. All the films share a dramatic, brooding style of cinematography that turned the city into a starkly lighted stage set.
